The house on the hill doesn’t compete with the view. It simply frames it — local stone on the facade, a wood fireplace inside, and a valley on three sides.

The entire construction was done with local craftsmen. The materials were found within the landscape. The building was always meant to look as if it had grown there rather than been placed there.

Some houses resist time. Umber Home was designed to welcome it.

Located in Malcha Marg, New Delhi, this multi-generational residence is clad in Dholpur stone and accented with copper, a material selected for the way it changes over time. What begins as a warm metallic highlight gradually develops a blue-green patina, allowing the house to age with grace and character.

The design revolves around a front garden and a central open-to-sky void that brings light deep into the home while visually connecting its floors. Full-height windows, high ceilings, and a restrained material palette create a sense of openness, keeping the focus on natural light, surrounding greenery, and the rhythms of family life. The result is a home that feels unified as a whole, while allowing each generation its own place within it.

Rain teaches a building what no drawing board can — that the best architecture is the one that knows when to open itself to the weather.
