Every project tells a story. Some continue to inspire long after completion.
Today, we're revisiting one of our celebrated residential developmentsโ€”VGN La Parisienne, located in Nolambur, Chennai.
Completed in 2012, this 2,68,000 sq.ft. residential community was envisioned to combine timeless architecture, landscaped open spaces, and a people-centric living environment.
At C. S***a Rao Associates, we believe great architecture isn't measured by trends; it's measured by how well it continues to serve the people who live in it.

Behind the Build #01 ๐Ÿ—๏ธ
Counterfort Retaining Walls

Visited one of our ongoing hospital project sites in Chennai today and got a closer look at these massive basement retaining walls.

Four interesting things to notice ๐Ÿ‘‡

1๏ธโƒฃ Why are there projections at regular intervals along the wall?

These are called counterforts โ€” structural stiffeners that help the retaining wall resist huge lateral earth pressure in deep basement excavations.

2๏ธโƒฃ Why are they plastered even though theyโ€™ll be buried underground?

The plastering helps create a smooth surface for waterproofing, covers imperfections, and improves durability against moisture and hydrostatic pressure.

3๏ธโƒฃ Why are systems like this commonly used in hospitals and large developments?

Deep basements face enormous soil and groundwater pressure. Counterfort retaining walls improve structural stability and efficiency for large-scale projects.

4๏ธโƒฃ What are counterforts called in different parts of the world?

Depending on region, site practice, or project teams, they are also informally referred to as:
โ€ข Buttresses
โ€ข Wall stiffeners
โ€ข RCC ribs
โ€ข Retaining wall ribs
โ€ข Structural fins

Though technically, โ€œcounterfortโ€ is the correct structural engineering term in this type of retaining wall system.

One of the most fascinating parts of construction is that some of the most important engineering elements remain permanently hidden below the ground.

Throwback to one of our early conceptual proposals โ€” a contemporary mixed-use mall & multiplex envisioned in Padur, Chennai.

Designed as a vibrant commercial destination with retail, entertainment, and public gathering spaces, the proposal explored bold massing, large-format faรงades, open circulation courts, and an iconic street presence along OMR.

Even years later, itโ€™s interesting to revisit how design thinking evolves while certain ideas remain timeless.
