Ceiling heights are the most invisible layer of design, yet the most deeply felt.

Inspired by The Not So Big House by Sarah Susanka, I often think of volume as the true language of space. A floor plan can only tell you so much, the real experience lies in what you feel.

When a space gently compresses with a lower ceiling and then opens up into a higher volume, something shifts within us. The room feels larger, lighter and more expansive, even when the footprint hasn’t changed.

But it’s not just about creating drama.
Lower ceilings can make us feel held, grounded, at ease. Higher ceilings allow us to breathe, to pause, to expand.

It’s this quiet play between compression and release that makes a home feel layered, intimate, and alive.

Design isn’t just about how a space looks. It’s about how it moves you.

Colour palette ties a space together, quietly creating harmony.

Fabrics for furnishings and window treatments bring in texture and that subtle oomph.

A pathway is never just a way to reach a home, it’s the beginning of the experience.

It sets the tone for arrival through its material, its direction, its pace. Sometimes it draws you in gently, sometimes it slows you down, but it always shapes how you feel before you even step inside.

For me, a path should never feel placed on the landscape, but carved from it.
Where greenery isn’t just along the edges, but layered around you with ground cover, shrubs, trees that softening boundaries, filtering light, creating depth.

In that moment, you’re not just walking to a house, you’re moving through a feeling.

And that’s where design shifts from something you see, to something you truly experience.

Meeting Sarah after 7 years felt like a full circle moment. We spoke about the first time we met, and how that one encounter quietly reshaped not just my perspective on design but the way I actually design today.

My day trip to Raleigh was truly special. Our conversation drifted into how design has evolved from 2004 to 2026 what’s changed, what hasn’t.

And the truth is, the core of design remains timeless.
It’s the way we perceive it, experience it, and bring it to life that keeps evolving.
