Back in 2012, we moved from our 700 sq. ft. home into a independant 5000 sq ft house Jennifer designed for us from the ground up in Shenoy Nagar, Chennai.

What she created was not just a bigger house, but a completely different way of living. Every space was thoughtfully planned around our family and our daily routines. Even today, the house feels relevant, comfortable, and a joy to live in.

As her uncle and her very first independent client, it has been wonderful to watch her journey. Fifteen years later, our home continues to serve us beautifully.

The beautiful photograph is only the end of the story.

Architecture is often reduced to what we see - finishes, furniture, colour, styling.

But some of the most important work begins when something goes wrong.

These cracks made us ask questions.

Why here?
Why this pattern?
Is it plaster shrinkage?
Movement between different materials?
Thermal stress?
Water?
Workmanship?
Or something within the material mix itself?

One conversation we need to have in India is around the transition from river sand to manufactured sand.

M-sand is not inherently a poor material. Used correctly, appropriately graded manufactured sand can produce excellent construction.

But changing a material without understanding how it behaves can create problems.

Particle shape, grading and fines influence workability and water demand. Add uncontrolled water on site to make a mix easier to work with, combine it with poor curing or inappropriate proportions, and the risk of shrinkage and cracking can increase.

And even then, the sand may not be the culprit.

That is why we don’t believe in simply filling a crack and painting over it.

First diagnose. Then detail. Then repair.

Because architecture isn’t just about making something beautiful.

It is understanding why buildings behave the way they do and continuing to research, question and learn from them long after the drawings leave the studio.

Lighting is one of the most overlooked elements in design.

Too often, a single ceiling light is expected to do everything. The result is a space that can feel flat even when the architecture, materials and furniture are beautifully considered.

Good lighting is layered.

• Ambient light sets the overall atmosphere.
• Task light supports the way we live and work.
• Accent light draws attention to what matters.
* Mood light brings warmth, depth and calm.

When these layers come together, light does more than illuminate a space. It shapes how we experience it.

Because good lighting isn’t simply about how a space looks.

It’s about how you feel within it.

A home is never finished when the construction ends.
It is finished when it begins to feel lived in.

The architecture creates the framework.

Light shapes the mood.
Materials add warmth.
Views bring the outside in.

Then come the quieter layers,
the artwork collected over time,
a swing that becomes everyone’s favourite place,
linen that softens a room,
a chair beside a window that invites you to pause,
objects chosen not to fill space, but to give it meaning.

Design isn’t about adding more.

It’s about knowing what belongs.
