The Offshoot is an extension of Hariesh's 14 year service in Horticulture under the name and style of 'Matangi' The Offshoot , Gardens and Beyond is the thematic venture which represents a state where home gardens not just mean something which is static but has a conceptual dynamic nature with

continuous changing elements and beyond. The Offshoot addresses these changes more practically. The Offshoot identifies itself as a professional agency which offers services related to development, rejuvenation and maintenance of home and office gardens, container plants and terrace gardens. The Offshoot also is venturing into popularizing adaptable and adoptable plant species in city landscapes , commencing with Madras and extending further to other cities. This means to bring back the long forgotten and original plants and varieties which flourish in certain climate. A nursery to achieve this goal is being initiated. It is evident that garden care is no more a lay man subject. Gardens tend to lose sheen with improper care and lack of know how. Whilst , garden care may demand some work force assistance; knowledge on the correct techniques and trouble shooting in gardens is a matter of interest and value among majority of garden enthusiasts. The Offshoot team plans to bridge this gap by conducting a series of training on specific areas of garden care , 3 month and 6 month gardening course programs to instill adequate knowledge on right ways of handling your garden. Specialists in various field will assist in these programs. Last and never the least, The Offshoot plans to be a resource center for transfer of viable and adaptable technologies of agriculture to needy farmers in the field of agriculture, horticulture, agro forestry, organic farming, organic certifications, supply chain management of agri commodities and newer strategies to help the entire system of Indian Agriculture to sustain and grow. With this challenging mission, we look forward to the support of like minded enthusiasts to motivate the initiatives of The Offshoot to reach better levels in committing itself to excellence in the related field.

FREE 7 Day Knowledge sharing series: - How to have a happily going vegetable garden?

My journey with gardens started quite young in school, which made me work on veggies and garden plants at my home, thirty years back. Least did I know then, that gardening would be my academic qualification in college days and a lifetime passion.

A purposeful graduation and post-graduation in Horticulture from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, a paradise on earth in Coimbatore, paved the way for me to further learn about my passionate subject at a time when internet was very nascent and everything had to be learnt the hard way.

This learning in me, evolved with time and transformed into simple and practical knowledge sharing on the very basics of veggie and container gardening. I have been giving talks and conducting workshops for beginners who are interested in simple home gardens and have helped hundreds of them in setting up and sustaining their home gardens in the last ten plus years.

Recently, even after the many social groups on gardening who are doing a wonderful coordination of relevant inputs in gardening, I am seeing a lot of people in these groups and among the common public are challenged to setup and grow their own home grown veggies, SIMPLIFIED and HAPPILY.

Hence, I have decided to create a 7 -day FREE knowledge sharing series. Here’s what we will be learning together!

Day 1 - The 5 Myths that’s destroying the sustenance of a veggie Garden!
Day 2 - The 3 misleads done by Online Gardening entities!
Day 3 - The 5 basic tips to start a veggie garden!
Day 4 - Revealed- The right veggies for this season. That which will take you forward!!
Day 5 - Photo gallery of simple home veggies of starters
Day 6 – Video of Challenges faced by veggie garden enthusiasts …..
Day 7 - Your Next Steps

Please save this number, as I will be using Whatsapp’s broadcast feature for this knowledge sharing series.

Now.... Who are all interested in buying such naturally grown and naturally out of shape veggies? How many of us will be happy to get the same kind of veggies in our own homes.

We become good in gardening only if we start appreciating the "shape challenged" fruits and veggies which are otherwise too good to taste and enjoy.

This is a must read... In spite of the article being a bit lengthy. We have experienced the same issue when we tested market grown carrots showed ridiculously low vitamin A and drumstick leaves showed steep fall in iron content than what was given in legendary literature of the 1950's.

Yes. We are producing and eating less nutritious, colorful and attractive food in the name of farm fresh.

All this is due to the so called quick growing of edible crops starting from cereals, pulses, fruits, vegetables and oil seeds.
Please take steps to eat nutritiously.

The atmosphere is literally changing the food we eat, for the worse. And almost nobody is paying attention.

Making the connection

Every cell, every molecule and every fragment of existence cannot exist without a purpose, a goal to which it can strive to. There is no such thing as meaningless existence.
When life is lived while understanding that concept it can be said that one is mindful. In essence one has to live with a constant mindfulness. For example eating while watching the television is a complete no-no.

So how do we apply this concept to gardening? Being mindful of the beauty of a flower, being aware of the function of a leaf, being aware of the teeming life that makes up the soil, are all part of mindful gardening. Apart from this being aware that even the mealy bug which is considered an enemy, being aware of the caterpillar making it's way through your plants and accepting that they too are part of the system are also the traits of a mindful gardener.

Now this is where modern day farming went terribly wrong. By mindless harvests with only the yield and income in mind, complete disrespect for the delicate balance of nature's cycle, the insensitive plundering of nature's free gift for selfish needs are the reasons for our unsustainable lives of today. It is after all a chain of events.
So whether it be vegetables being harvested or flowers being plucked or leaves being pruned let us be mindful gardeners and watch how that would impact our lives!

Aadi 18th
Music and dance fill the air,
Hands clap together in perfect harmony, colourful bangles ti**le away as the women move swiftly, enjoying unbridled freedom as they perform the traditional dance 'kummi’.
With the dawn of the 18th day of Aadi, many villages celebrate 'mullaipari’.... A Festival of Tamil Nadu.
During this Festival, women of each household carry on their heads 9 different types of sprouted grains in earthen pots or 'navadhaniyam’... It is said that this Festival is celebrated to ask the goddess of the village to bless the season with a good harvest.
On a more scientific note 'mullaipari' is actually a communal system of farming practiced in ancient India wherein the sprouted grains of each household is displayed to the entire village as the procession walks on. The household which has the best sprouted grains (I.e) vigorous and strong seedlings is selected and seeds from that household is used for sowing in all the farms. By this way they ensure that the best seeding material is used for the season.
Wasn't that interesting?!
