Shimizu's Luna Ring proposes an an array of solar cells around the moon's equator to harvest solar energy and beam it back to Earth. This s proposed by a Japanese firm shimizu corp.

The goal is to generate a continuous stream of power from the Moon's lunar equator, which receives a steady amount of exposure to the Sun, and beam it down to Earth from the near side of the Moon. It's an ambitious idea that calls for assembling machinery transported from Earth and using tele-operated robots to do the actual construction on the Moon's surface, once it arrives.

TAMIL NADU INTRODUCES NET METERING CAP :) :) this a great advantage to users because you can earn money at hme whn your solar system produces excess power.

Net metering cap : Introducing a cap on the amount of solar-generated electricity rooftop PV users can inject into the grid.

Both existing and newly installed solar systems in Tamil Nadu are legible for net metering under the new order.

These pictures makes you understand better about net metering.

Puducherry firm designs solar-powered portable lab

At a time when setting up an active solar powered system in mainstream residential complexes still proves to be a challenge, a Puducherry-based processing and instrumentation firm has designed a solar powered portable scientific laboratory-cum-house.

A 500-foot office-cum-research laboratory, it is made up of thick iron sheets, and gets power from the solar modules, which are set up on roof top of the portable structure.

The solar modules have about 1000 MW installed capacity, which is sufficient for meeting the energy requirements, such as running of electrical appliances fitted in the multi-purpose infrastructure.

The company, which has designed it on pilot basis, is all set to open it for public viewing at Gandhi Thidal on Beach Road here shortly.

“Our intensive Research and Development has made it possible to design solar powered portable laboratory-cum-house. The government’s subsidy for solar power and a drop in the cost of solar instruments are also reasons why the project is a successful one,” says P. Rangaraj, Chairman and Managing Director, Chemin C&I, Mettupalayam.

He added that structures such as portable house, site office, information centre were common in European countries, United States, as well as elsewhere. Since Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have large number of sunny days in a year, the company decided to start the portable house with solar power. The success of the project would definitely motivate residents and and industrial stakeholders to go for solar power for household requirements and office purposes. With suitable modifications, portable kiosks could be used for vending food, beverages, vegetables and groceries.

The solar modules have about 1000 MW installed capacity

TEMPLES IN STATE TO TAP INTO SOLAR ENERGY

A number of temples, coming under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE), are going in for solar energy in a bid to bring down their dependence on conventional energy by 10 to 20 per cent, said P. Dhanapal, Commissioner for HR & CE.

Talking to The Hindu, Mr.Dhanapal said that a 20 KVA solar power plant installed at the Tiruchendur Subramania Swamy Temple with the support of Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) is all set for commissioning.

At present, works for installation of 10 KVA solar power generation panels are being taken up at the Thanumalayan temple and Kumari Amman temple in Kanyakumari, Aranganathaswamy temple in Sri Rangam, Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, Tiruttani Subramania Swamy temple and in 25 other smaller and medium temples across the State.

In addition, installation of solar power generation panels with a capacity of two to five KVA is being taken up at Triplicane Parthasarathy temple, Vadapalani Murugan temple and Mylapore Kapaleeswarar temple. Once the projects are commissioned, the temples can bring down their dependence on conventional power by about ten to 20 per cent.

After seeing the benefits out of these initiatives, the scheme for tapping solar power for all other temples and for capacity of augmentation of solar power generation for the temples would be taken up in a phased manner. This is being done in accordance with the recent solar energy policy announced by the Chief Minister Ms.Jayalalithaa.

Going by the increasing number of cows being donated to temples across the State by devotees as their offering, cow shelters (‘goshala’) are being established at Mylapore Kapaleeswarar temple, Thiruvanmiyur Marundeeswarar temple, Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, Tiruchendur Subramania Swamy temple, Sri Rangam Aranganathaswamy temple, Rameswaram Ramanatha Swamy temple. The temples were donated cows are in excess they are being given away to women self-help groups and temple priests.

With regard to restoration of temple properties usurped by individuals and those under encroachment, Mr.Dhanapal said that 822.21 acres of temple lands that were under encroachment have been retrieved besides 185 house sites. The drive in the last two-years also helped in demolition of buildings that were on temple lands.

TN UNVEILS SOLAR POWER TARIFF, LEAVES INDUSTRY SORE

CHENNAI: Solar power producers in Tamil Nadu will be paid Rs 5.78 per unit, among the lowest in the country, as per the draft tariffs set by Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission ( TNERC).

In a draft consultative paper, the state's energy regulator has sought public comments before August 31, to aid in fixing final tariffs for solar power producers . These draft guidelines are separate from the state's plan to purchase 1,000MW of solar power at Rs 6.48 per unit under a separate tender process. The Rs 6.48 per unit offer had met with little success.

Anna University sets up solar power plant to meet energy needs

CHENNAI: Anna University in Chennai has set up a 3kw solar power plant on the campus to reduce dependence on non-renewable forms of energy.

University vice-chancellor M Rajaram inaugurated the solar plant installed at the Centre for Nanoscience and Technology on the A C Tech campus of the university. The solar power plant, donated by an alumnus, is fabricated with polycrystalline silicon modules and can produce electricity at an average of 12,000 watts a day.

University officials said part of the power requirements of the Centre for Nanoscience and Technology would be met using solar energy from the plant. The centre has been conducting research on concentrated solar photovoltaics to reduce the panel area while considering higher capacity plants.

The university is planning to set up such plants in all the constituent institutions to meet Tamil Nadu's solar policy, which mandates that 6% of the total power consumption in all educational institutions should be met by solar energy.
