The interviews represent the more forceful side of all of us that portion of our brain which attempts to cope with all we cannot bear. I am one writer who hated the Fifties. lived close to the Sixties, and was much out of step with the Seventies. Still. one does one's best If my deepest instinct over the last decade has been to withdraw serious writing, there has also been another part of myself that will not relinquish the idea to that one must be there does it come with my mother's milk? Such was the illusion while I spoke to speak to one's time.
So I would say to the reader that you hold in your hand the work of a divided man. Not schizophrenic - divided. His personality is built on two points of reference. (Perhaps this is why his body, whenever he eats too much, is shaped like an ellipse.) The reader, however, need feel no vast superiority. Metaphorically, all too many of us are, these days, kin to pregnant women, and feed not one person within us but two. Here, then, are two sides of myself as I survived the Seventies my literary ghost looking for that little refinement of one's art which becomes essential as one grows older. and the cry of the street debater, front and center, who always speaks in the loudest voice
