Komorebi

Set within an old, established gated community in Bangalore, Komorebi occupies a 10,000sft east facing plot. The maturity of the site, particularly it’s trees became the starting point for the design. The house is placed in the existing clearings and opens up to the landscape in a cinematic way.

The long site, informed a more linear approach. The clients, a retired couple, had a simple requirement of 3 bedrooms and shared spaces, which reduced the footprint and allowed nature to be the main protagonist.
The architecture is conceived as an assemblage of simple, platonic objects, carefully positioned in relation to one another and to the existing foliage, giving the form a sense of being perched on site, rather than being imposed.

The house is named Komorebi, after the Japanese phenomenon of sunlight filtering through leaves. This idea is central to the material and spatial experience. A layering of louvered screens together with the existing canopy, diffuses the eastern light, casting shifting, dappled patterns across the interiors.

The material palette is deliberately restrained, with pinewood shuttered concrete forming the architectural language. It’s tactile surface responds particularly strongly to the filtered light, generating shifting reliefs. The screen intensifies this interplay, creating dramatic light and shade while maintaining the house’s sense of privacy.
The interiors, like the architecture is an assemblage of furniture and objects that the client’s have collected over the years. The simplicity of the furnishings and interior material palette, allows for a more outward experience from within. Teak wood accents compliment the textured walls and antique furniture.

The intimacy and austerity of the architecture allows the grandness of nature and light to permeate into the house.
