On a major structural project, one of the most valuable things you can do is have someone check the work.

Not because the design team is not capable, but because on high stakes projects, a second layer of expert scrutiny is simply good engineering.

That is what a peer review is.
An independent structural engineer reviews the design before it is finalised.

They are not there to redo the work. They are there to catch what the original team might have missed. They examine the analysis model, the load combinations, the structural detailing, and the codes applied.

Every assumption is questioned. Every critical element is verified.
So, when do you need one? On tall buildings. On complex or irregular structures.

Any project where a structural error would carry serious consequences, whether to safety, cost, or timeline. As a rule, the higher the stakes, the stronger the case for a peer review.
Here is the important part.

There is a category of buildings where structural failure is simply not an option. Hospitals. Schools. The places society depends on most, especially in an emergency.

Yet many of them carry a hidden vulnerability.
IS 1893 is India’s seismic design code.

It defines how a structure must be designed to withstand earthquake forces.

The code has been revised significantly over the years, and buildings constructed before 2002 were designed to be a far older and less demanding version of it.

That creates a gap. A gap between how the building was designed, and what current seismic standards require. In an ordinary building, that gap is a concern. In a hospital or a school, full of people who cannot easily evacuate, it is a serious risk.

Seismic retrofitting is how that gap is closed. The existing structure is thoroughly assessed, then strengthened to meet the demands of the current code. Done well, much of this work can happen while the building remains in use, because these are exactly the buildings that cannot afford to shut down.

For structures like these, retrofitting is not a box ticking exercise. It is a responsibility. And meetings take a structural consultant who understands both what the code requires and how the specific building behaves.
