SCHAFBOCK is German for the Big Horn Mountain goat, who roams wild in the ranges of north America and is famous for its big spiral curved horns – which gives one of the natural forms of evolution – the spiral. Besides being aesthetic, these animals are also legendary for their stubbornness & fights for what they believe in,
where they will refuse to budge from their territory often taking opponent

s head on. Our firm attempts to evolve professionally competent, cost efficient solutions, bringing these design intensive, fantastic solutions, within short reach of a segment, which deserve professional services of professionals, but is often unable to, by not compromising on its principles and ethics. Composed of a group of dedicated, young and dynamic group of designers, structural and construction engineers who see every project as a challenge and every challenge achievable. Though specialising in the design and engineering of tensile structures, the firm preoccupies itself immensely in the concept of Leichtbauflachentragwerke (lightweight design) which forms a basis of their inquiry into geodesics, organic structures, tensigrity and foldable structures. Besides working on real live projects, we also involve ourselves in researching and developing newer applications and methods of bringing these technologies into the
mainstream.

This atrium canopy represents the coming together of architecture, engineering and craftsmanship to create a space that students and teachers will experience every day.

Performance goes beyond protection.

Carefully designed gaps around the polycarbonate skylights allow natural ventilation, while diffused daylight keeps the atrium bright and welcoming - reducing the need for artificial cooling during the day.

With free-flow drainage and minimal maintenance beyond occasional cleaning, the canopy is designed for reliable, long-term performance with everyday practicality.

This was one of the most structurally complex tensile forms we have undertaken - a single undulating surface that demanded exceptional precision in both engineering and fabrication.

Meeting the project timeline before the monsoon, fabricating such a complex membrane and tensioning a large one-piece structure without conventional scaffolding required careful planning and seamless coordination throughout the ex*****on process.

The finished canopy may appear effortless - but every curve tells a story of precision.

From design to completion, this project was delivered in just 3 months, with the on-site installation completed in approximately 20 days.

Like most construction projects, site realities differed from the drawings. Changing dimensions, evolving architectural requirements and on-site coordination demanded continuous problem-solving to stay true to the original design intent.

The transformation from an open courtyard to a vibrant, covered atrium reflects our value of thoughtful planning and disciplined ex*****on.

Beautiful forms demand equally dependable engineering.

The structure is supported by a mild steel framework protected with an epoxy system and PU top coat, designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 44 m/s while delivering an expected service life of 20–25 years.

Behind the lightness of the fabric lies a carefully engineered structural system that quietly does its job - allowing the architecture to remain the focus.

A conventional opaque roof would have blocked daylight and changed the character of the atrium entirely. A tensile canopy offered the perfect balance of protection, openness and natural ventilation.

The flowing geometry draws inspiration from sand dunes and organic soap-bubble forms - avoiding rigid lines in favour of a softer, more fluid architectural language.

This contrast between the playful membrane and the solid brick architecture creates a unique visual balance, while carefully accommodating existing site constraints, including the atrium geometry and centrally located lift core.

A courtyard should feel alive - not enclosed.

Designed to do more than just provide shade, this canopy preserves natural daylight, ventilation, and a connection to the outdoors while reducing the temperature beneath it by up to 15°C.

The result is a bright, comfortable space that serves as a morning assembly area, play zone, breakout space, outdoor classroom, and event venue.

The soft daylight filtering through the skylights creates the warm, welcoming atmosphere the space was always intended to have.

Every successful structure begins with understanding the space it belongs to.

This canopy spans approximately 334 sq. m (30m × 15m) as a single continuous tensile structure, with a structural depth of approximately 2 metres, carefully positioned at the heart of the school's atrium.

Rather than breaking the roof into multiple modules, the design was conceived as one uninterrupted surface - allowing the form to flow naturally across the courtyard while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding architecture.

Presenting the atrium tensile canopy installed at Happy Planet School, Noida.

The brief was to create a lightweight roof with minimal steel structural interference while incorporating skylights of varying sizes, locations, and heights. The result needed to be playful yet elegant, technically complex yet effortless in appearance.

The primary objective was to protect the central courtyard from the elements while allowing warm, diffused natural light to transform it into an inviting space for students and teachers.

What makes this project memorable isn't just the structure itself, but the purpose it continues to serve.

As one of the earliest tensile structures in the city, it continues to provide an elegant shaded space for patients, visitors, and caregivers by day, while transforming into a beautifully illuminated architectural feature after sunset.

Our sincere thanks to Medipolis Hospital for their trust, Studio Saransh for the vision, and Neel Jain for helping bring this collaboration together.
