Recent surveys and opinions from farmers and landowners suggest they are concerned about the farm and the next generation. The main concerns are
1. Leaving a negative Legacy for the next generation

2. Burdening them with an unprofitable enterprise

3. Challenged with meeting biodiversity criteria and a changing regulatory landscape

4. Achieving a reasonable work life balance.

5. The lack of a guaranteed income

By amending the farm mix to introduce forestry across 20% of the holding, c 8 hectares of a typical suckler farm (based on data from Teagasc etc), the average annual income increases significantly with a guaranteed income from forestry premiums. The income increases to more than €11,600 per year on average when you move from 32 hectares pure suckler to a 24 plus 8 mix.
