This is what the government met for 2 days and came up with this bu****it! Now I've seen many posts this evening of companies pulling the plug and closing there doors. It's a disgrace what they have done.

📌 CHANGES TO TAX ON FUEL

⛽️ As part of ongoing engagement with the European Commission, Government will reduce excise on diesel by a further 10 cent (VAT inclusive), bringing the total reduction on diesel to 32 cent (VAT inclusive);

⛽️ Government will reduce the excise on petrol by a further 10 cent (VAT inclusive), bringing the total reduction on petrol to 27 cent (VAT inclusive);

🟢 Government will reduce excise on Marked Gas Oil (Green Diesel) by a further 2.4 cent (VAT inclusive), bringing the total reduction on Green Diesel to 7.4 cent (VAT inclusive).

(These overall reductions include the already announced NORA levy.)

📌 Government will defer the planned increase in Carbon Tax, scheduled for May 1st, until the Budget. This will impact Green Diesel and non-propellant fuels such as kerosene heating oil, natural gas and solid fuels.

🗓️ The reductions in the excise on fuel for consumers will take effect from Midnight, Wednesday 15th April 2026 and run until 31st July 2026.

đź›» *HAULAGE AND COACH SCHEME*

To support the haulage and coach sector, the Department of Transport will be establishing a new Road Transporters Support Scheme (RTSS). This will be modelled on the Licenced Haulage Support Schemes of 2022 and 2023 deployed to assist the sector with the higher fuel prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The RTSS will provide direct payments to the haulage and coach operators. Payments will be graduated, with smaller businesses receiving a proportionately greater level of support. An initial payment backdated for March 2026 will made to each qualifying haulage or coach operator. The Scheme will remain in place for three months. Payments will be made for April and May, if the national average price of diesel exceeds €1.90 per litre in the month.

As well as the above, for coach operators providing local link and school transport services, a separate support measure will be introduced through the contractual arrangements with providers of these services.

📌 The combined cost per month of these supports to the transport sector is estimated at €40 million.

• The haulage sector is of national strategic importance, bringing essential supplies into and around the State, supporting key infrastructure and enabling the maintenance of all economic and social activity in our country.

• The commercial bus & coach sector is a pillar of Ireland’s public transport & tourism sector, ensuring urban-rural connectivity and underpinning public and school transport networks.

• The sectors face a challenging operating environment. Given the nature of the business, diesel is the most significant element of costs for many in the industry. The rise in diesel prices since the war in the Middle East has placed further pressure on businesses across the sector.

• Higher prices for hauliers lead to secondary price rises across all sectors they supply and feed into higher prices across the economy. The European Commission has stated that it is essential to contain freight transport costs to limit wider inflationary pressures.

• Recognising this, Government on 24 March the Government introduced temporary and targeted measures to reduce fuel prices for households and businesses, with additional supports for key sectors of the Irish economy.

• For the hauliers, the measures included a significant enhancement of the Diesel Rebate Scheme, with the rebate per litre increased from 7.5c to 12c. Hauliers also benefited from the general reduction in excise and the NORA levy on diesel.

• With diesel prices continuing to rise, Government has now decided to act again. For hauliers and coach operators, the Department of Transport will be establishing a new Road Transporters Support Scheme (RTSS). This will be modelled on the Licenced Haulage Support Schemes of 2022 and 2023 deployed to assist the sector with the higher fuel prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

• The RTSS will provide direct payments to the haulage and coach operators. Smaller businesses will receive a proportionately greater level of support.

• An initial payment backdated for March 2026 will made to each qualifying haulage or coach operator. The Scheme will remain in place for three months, if the national average price of diesel exceeds €1.90 per litre in the month.

• Together with other measures, this represents a potential additional €40 million per month in funding support directly to the transport sector.

📌 NEW FARMING AND FISHERS SUPPORT SCHEME*

A comprehensive new €100 million Fuel Subsidy Support Scheme will to assist farmers, agricultural contractors and fishers facing unprecedented increases in fuel costs. The payments will cover the months of March up to the end of July which also coincides with peak fuel usage season for field work on farms.
The package comes in response to the sharp rise in the price of Marked Gas Oil (MGO), commonly known as green diesel, which has nearly doubled since February due to ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Prices have risen from €0.97 per litre in late February to €1.80 per litre in recent weeks, placing severe financial pressure on key sectors of Ireland’s food production economy.

Targeted Support During Peak Season
The scheme will provide €20 million per month in supports, with funding directly linked to fuel usage last year to ensure those most impacted by the fuel price increase receive the greatest assistance.
Farmers and agricultural contractors will benefit from a support rate equivalent to approximately 20 cents per litre of MGO (marked gas oil) used based on verified fuel consumption in 2025. The funding will be distributed proportionally a point that was strongly emphasised in ongoing engagements with the representative farm and farm contractor groups.

Supports for Farmers and Contractors
Approximately 120,000 farmers and 1,500 full-time agricultural contractors will be eligible to apply for support. Payments will be made through a single application process, with funding allocated based on fuel usage last year.
Eligibility will require applicants to demonstrate active farming or contracting status, tax compliance, and verifiable fuel usage. A system of checks and inspections will be implemented to ensure accountability. EU state aid cover will also be necessary.

Dedicated Support for Fishers and Specialist Sectors
Up to €5 million per month will be allocated to support fishers and other sectors effected such as forestry and specialist horticulture. Fishers are facing acute challenges, exacerbated by very high fuel costs. A tailored scheme for fishers will be developed, subject to EU State Aid requirements.

🗓️ Implementation and Next Steps
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has commenced intensive preparations to implement the scheme as quickly as possible. Given the scale and complexity timelines will be carefully managed to ensure efficient delivery. Stakeholders will be kept informed as the scheme is finalised and rolled out.
