Six months of work growing a crop... and now it could end up on the compost heap.

That's the reality facing some Irish vegetable growers after the recent heatwave sparked an unexpected problem: people have stopped buying vegetables.

In Galway, grower Kenneth Keavy says thousands of courgettes may have to be dumped as soaring temperatures, holiday season and changing consumer habits have triggered a sharp drop in demand. While crops are thriving in the warm conditions, many growers are struggling to find buyers.

It's a stark reminder that weather extremes don't just affect yields. They can hit farm incomes in ways many consumers never see.

Mr Keavy believes the challenges facing Irish horticulture are reaching a critical point, with growers squeezed by rising costs, supermarket pressure and increasingly unpredictable weather.

Have you noticed buying habits changing during the hot spell? And does Irish horticulture get enough attention compared to the other farming sectors?

Very sorry to hear the news this morning of the sad passing of Dermot Murnaghan. I have known him for about 25 years and have been working in his garden in Inch for most of that time. A very witty man with a great sense of humour and so down to earth as well. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace Dermot. ❤️🙏xx

Well-known and hugely popular broadcaster Dermot Murnaghan, who spent much of his childhood here in Armagh after his family moved from England, has passed away.

Dermot attended St Malachy’s Primary School in the city and often spoke with fondness about his early years in Armagh (main picture of him on a visit to Armagh).

He later returned to our streets and landmarks to present the BBC documentary The Great British Story: Armagh, helping to shine a light on the area’s rich and sometimes hidden history.

A hugely respected journalist and presenter with the BBC, ITV and Sky News, Dermot has died aged 68, a year after revealing he had been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer.

From all in Armagh, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues. Armagh was a special place in his story – and he will be fondly remembered as part of ours.
