When outdoors this summer, keep an eye out for ticks. These are small brown bugs whose bite can cause Lyme disease.

If you find a tick on yourself, remove it, and contact your GP if you develop a circular red rash or a fever.

It is important that farmers and horse owners take steps to protect their animals during high temperatures to avoid the possibility of serious health and welfare problems arising due to the excessive heat. Hot weather can pose a risk to pets and livestock and it is vital to take action to protect animals in these conditions.

If and when you're at the beach over the next few weeks watch for jellyfish. Extra care and attention is advised when visiting beaches for swimming and exercise over the next few weeks. (The attached photos are stock photos of Lion's Mane)
WHAT TO EXPECT IF STUNG
🔴 Immediate pain, stinging or pricking at the site of contact.
🔴 Skin reactions such as redness, itching, blistering, numbness & wheal formation.
🔴 Allergic reactions have RARELY been reported.
WHAT TO DO IMMEDIATELY AFTER BEING STUNG
✅ Swim ashore quickly and calmly.
✅ Seek medical attention from a lifeguard if available.
✅ Flush the affected area with lots of sea water to remove attached tentacles. A beach bucket may be useful.
✅ Get help to rinse areas that may be difficult to reach on your own.
✅ If helping someone else, take care not to get stung yourself.
✅ Remove any remaining tentacles carefully from the skin using the edge of a bank card, a tweezers or a gloved hand. After each 'pass', the bank card, tweezers or glove should be rinsed to prevent return of tentacles.
WHAT NOT TO DO
❌ Do not apply cold applications. It can worsen the discomfort.
❌ Do not rinse with fresh water.
❌ Do not cover the wound with a tight bandage.
❌ Do not scratch or rub the affected area.
WHAT TO DO ASAP
✅ If painful, immerse the affected limb or wound in hot water as hot as can be tolerated for 30-90 minutes or until pain is easing. As the sting can cause numbness take care not to cause inadvertent scalding. If immersion in hot water is not possible, cover the wound with hot flannels.
✅ You can immerse the area in hot water again, or use hot flannels up to 2 hours after the sting, if pain returns.
✅ If pain persists or itching develops, contact the NPIC, your GP or pharmacist for advice.
✅ Seek urgent medical attention in hospital if you experience breathing difficulties, chest tightness, swelling around the mouth or eyes or vomiting

Although many WILD BERRIES are delicious and safe to eat and are packed with nutrients and antioxidants, some can be POISONOUS.

To a child, berries growing on a PLANT, SHRUB or TREE may look attractive because of their bright colours or because the resemble blueberries, raspberries, etc they may be familiar with from eating at home.

WHAT TO KNOW
✅ In children, eating small amounts of wild berries from a plant, shrub or tree will rarely cause serious poisoning.
✅ Skin contact may cause irritation and/or rash.
✅ Thorns may cause puncture wounds and abrasions to the skin of children when they reach to pick the berries.
✅ Ingestion of berries from POISONOUS SPECIES (eg Deadly Nightshade,Yew, Woody Nightshade, Holly) may require medical assessment in HOSPITAL.

ADVICE
☑️ Know the names of plants, shrubs or tress growing in your garden.
☑️ Supervise children when they are playing in gardens and parks if wild berries are visible.
☑️ Teach young children always to ask permission to eat or drink anything that has not been given to them by an adult.
☑️ Call the Poison Centre for immediate advice on 01-8092166 if you suspect your child has eaten wild berries.

• Not moving animals in temperatures over 30 degrees
• Maximising ventilation by moving fewer animals
