Our pollinators need nectar and pollen from the wildflowers they have evolved alongside. Studies have shown that the seeds in many wildflower seed mixes are imported from other countries, and are not native, despite what the packet might say. There is a huge risk of accidentally bringing in invasive species like Black grass that, if spread, would be devastating to the Irish agricultural industry.

Choose patience, not packets, if you want to grow wildflowers. There are seeds already in the soil just waiting for a chance to appear. Reducing mowing and removing grass cuttings when you do mow lowers soil fertility over time and gives native flowers and beneficial grasses a chance to grow. They are perfectly adapted to give your local pollinators what they need... and they're free!

As the sun sets, the Moon Garden comes to life. Created by Newport Tidy Towns this special garden is packed with beautiful, scented flowers that attract moths, beetles, bats, and other night-time pollinators. These often-overlooked creatures play a huge role in keeping our ecosystems healthy and thriving. By planting species like honeysuckle, red campion, and night-scented stock, we’re creating a welcoming space for wildlife while adding beauty to our community. The Moon Garden, located beside the medical centre on the bank to the viaduct, is a simple reminder that even after dark, nature is hard at work – and together we can help it flourish.
