WINDOWS JAMMED SHUT? HANDLES NOT WORKING? 🔧

Another successful repair by UPVC Window & Door Doctor 👨‍🔧🪟

This customer contacted us after work had been carried out in the home by other contractors. Several windows were jammed shut and the handles were no longer working.

🔍 On inspection, we found the internal mechanisms were badly broken and in pieces, with the handles also damaged.

🛠️ We carefully opened each window sash without causing any damage to the frame or sash, removed the failed mechanisms and carried out a full replacement along with brand-new handles.

WINDOWS TO THINK TWICE ABOUT BEFORE BUYING 🪟🏠

We don’t supply or fit new windows or doors, so this isn’t a sales pitch. This is simply honest advice based on the problems we see every day while repairing windows and doors. 🔧

We’ve covered tilt & turn systems before. In our experience, they can become troublesome, especially with heavy triple-glazed units and doors. When these systems start giving trouble, repairs can become expensive. 💶

Another system we’re now seeing problems with is the newer flush window system. We’ve attended multiple customers with issues — including one customer who received a refund from a major window company due to badly manufactured windows, followed by two more customers experiencing problems with flush windows supplied by a different company.

💡 OUR ADVICE — KEEP IT SIMPLE!

If you’re buying new windows, consider a good-quality conventional opening window with:

✅ Heavy-duty hinges — especially with triple glazing
✅ A good 4 or 5-point locking system
✅ Quality hardware
✅ A simple opening and closing design that can be maintained and repaired in years to come

Sometimes the newest or fanciest system isn’t necessarily the best long-term option.

EMERGENCY FRENCH DOOR REPAIR – JAMMED SHUT! 🚪🔧

We received an emergency call this morning from a customer whose French doors had completely jammed in the locked position, leaving them unable to get out through the doors. 😨

On arrival, we found that the multi-point hook locking system with shoot bolts had completely failed while locked.

🔧 We carefully removed the heavy glass
✅ Opened the doors with ZERO damage to the sash or frame
🔧 Removed and fully replaced the failed multi-point locking system
🚪 Replaced the damaged handles on both doors
🛠️ Realigned both doors, which were badly out of alignment
🔐 Upgraded the locks to new anti-snap thumb-turn cylinders

🔐🏡 Extra Home Security & Fire-Safe Exit Upgrade

This customer contacted us looking to add extra security to their home, while also keeping things safe and practical for their young children. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Previously, the hall door could be opened simply by pushing down the outside handle if the door hadn’t been locked — meaning someone could potentially walk up, pull the handle down and enter. 🚪⚠️

We upgraded and adapted the door with:

🔹 A dual-handle system where the outside handle no longer opens the door
🔹 A new anti-snap thumb-turn cylinder, replacing the old key-to-key lock 🔐
🔹 An additional sash lock at the top of the door to help prevent young children from opening the thumb turn and getting outside 👶
🔹 A setup that still allows a quick exit from inside without searching for a key in an emergency 🔥🚑

Now, once the door closes behind you, it cannot simply be opened using the outside handle — a key is required to gain entry. 🔑✅

DOOR CATCHING & DAMAGING THE DOOR? 🔧

A customer contacted UPVC Window & Door Doctor because their door was badly catching and was actually damaging the door every time it was opened and closed. 😬

On inspection, we found the top hinges were badly damaged and needed replacing.

🔧 When one or two hinges have failed, we recommend replacing all of the hinges. The remaining hinges have been taking extra weight and pressure, which can cause premature wear and another failure.

We replaced the full set of hinges and correctly realigned the door. Now it’s:
