Heat pumps are becoming a standard feature in new-build homes, but where they're positioned can have a massive impact on your garden.

This should have been a brilliant private courtyard space. Instead, the heat pump has been positioned right in the heart of it.
It's not just about how it looks. The cold air coming from the unit can make the area unpleasant to sit in and can also make planting around it more challenging.

With a little more thought at the planning stage, this unit could have been positioned away from the main usable areas, leaving this space to become part of the garden.

When you're buying a new build, don't just look at the house and the size of the garden on the plans. Look at where the heat pump, bins, services, drains and other utilities are actually going to go.

Small decisions at the beginning can make a massive difference later.

Clotheslines are one of those things nearly every garden needs, but very few people actually want them to become a feature.
A standard rotary line can take up a surprising amount of space, especially in a smaller garden, and if it’s positioned badly it can end up dominating the whole area.

There are plenty of other options though. In my own garden I use a retractable clothesline. When I need it, I pull it out. When I’m finished, it disappears back against the wall and the garden feels like a garden again.
It’s a small decision, but these are exactly the sort of details worth thinking about when you’re planning an outdoor space.

where it goes, how often you use it, whether it gets in the way, and whether you actually need something permanently sitting in the middle of the garden.
Practical doesn’t have to mean ugly.

This garden has its own little microclimate.

It’s constantly windy, bitterly cold in winter, but this summer it was completely different. We had constant warm winds, serious heat around the pots and no amount of hand watering seemed to keep up. We went away for a few days and lost a serious amount of plants.

And in typical Irish fashion, while recording this reel it was absolutely lashing rain.

So was this just a once-off hot summer, or are these the kind of summers we need to start planning our gardens for?

Because if our weather keeps becoming more extreme, the way we choose plants, position pots and design our outdoor spaces may have to change with it.

New Build Garden Layout

A small new-build garden can still give you plenty of options if you work with the shape of the space rather than against it.

This garden is wider than it is long, so I'd use that width to help the space feel bigger. But a good layout is only part of the story. You also need to think about the heat pump, drainage, soil conditions and future screening before spending money on the finished garden.

The pretty picture is the easy bit. Making it work for the site long-term is what matters.

Nothing overlooks this garden right now, but with houses and apartments planned behind the boundary, privacy could become a very different story in a few years.

This is where planning ahead can save you money.

Pleached trees are a great option for narrow gardens because they give you screening above the boundary without taking up huge amounts of valuable garden space or blocking too much light.

You also don't have to buy fully established pleached trees. Buy the height and framework you need with a younger, thinner canopy and give it a few growing seasons to fill out. If the development behind you is going to take years to complete anyway, use that time to establish your screening.

It may not completely hide every building, but it can stop that direct line of sight straight into your garden and windows.

AI has become an incredible tool for garden inspiration. In seconds, it can take a blank outdoor space and show you what it could become.

But a great looking image is only the starting point.

AI doesn’t physically know what’s happening beneath your feet, how water moves through the site, how exposed the garden is, or the microclimate you’re working with. Those conditions can completely change what will and won’t work.

Use AI. Get ideas. Get inspired. But make decisions based on the reality of your site.

When planning an outdoor space, inspiration doesn’t have to come from Pinterest, Instagram or the latest garden trends.

Look beyond your own boundary.

Take notice of what’s growing successfully in local parks, neighbouring gardens, streets, towns and villages. Look at the plants that come back year after year, what suits the local conditions and what naturally feels at home in the area.

You don’t have to copy it. Take inspiration from it and bring elements of it into your own outdoor space.

Sometimes the best garden ideas are already growing around you.

Oil tanks are practical, but they don’t have to dominate your garden.

Here we’re using Carpinus betulus (hornbeam) to create a natural screen. With clay soil and ground that can get waterlogged, it’s a good fit for the conditions.

Planting during the dormant season using bare-root or root-balled plants can also save you hundreds compared with buying mature container-grown hedging.

Always allow suitable access and clearance around your oil tank and burner for filling, inspection and maintenance.

Have you ever spotted this mill wheel in Bantry, West Cork?

It’s beside Bantry Library, which was built directly on the site of the former Bantry Woollen and Flour Mills. Today the mill wheel makes a great water feature, with a lovely willow tree sitting just in front of it.

It looks like the water is naturally powering the wheel, but it’s actually electrically driven.

A good reminder with water features at home too. Pumps, filters, electricity and ongoing running costs all need to be considered, not just the looks. 💧🌿
