3rd in our series 'Climate impact on Building Performance', featuring our Cork City Passive House, exploring how it performs around the country based on its Annual Heat Demand and Heat Load.

The 4th in our 9-part series is our Waterfall Passive House, a rural project in Co. Cork completed in 2023. Fenestration placement responded to site constraints with a high hedgerow to the south, views to the west and privacy provision to the east and north, limiting solar access. It is interesting how this abruptly influences Annual Heat Demand but not Heat Load/comfort, should the project be located further north. Although with modest U-values we believe the excellent form factor and robust thermal bridge detailing contributes to the consistently low heat load characteristics. The property is provided with an exhaust air heat-pump and cost effective electric radiators offset by a PV array. BER: A1 (18.04 kWh/m2.a)

We are nearly ready for handover at our Dripsey Passive House with an incredible 0.42 ac/h airtightness result! This low carbon refurbishment has utilised an external cork insulation system to the 19th Century original dwelling, GUTEX woodfibre boards, insulative lime renders and Glapor Geocell floor insulation.

Nice to see the lime Render settling down to match Camden fort. This is being certified to the Plus standard, and has been an exemplary example of how embodied carbon can be reduced through careful specification. Use of GGBS low carbon concrete saved the equivalent of 9 yrs total energy use, not to mention cork external wall insulation and jute h**p in the roof.

An update on our Dripsey Passive House project, with Whitebon Developments. The project involves the upgrade and extension of a period property. The insulation and airtightness work to the original stone building are progressing nicely. All products being used are natural, low embodied carbon and breathable. The SecilVit Cork ETICS system is being applied externally. Supplied by Stoneware Studios, this is a breathable and sustainable external insulation system, using lime-based adhesives and plasters. Internally, the Diasen Diathonite plaster has been installed as a base layer and is now ready for the breathable gutex woodfibre dry lining system. Both systems were supplied by Cork Builders Providers via Ecological Building Systems and all works are being carried out by Novin Consultants. The airtightness works have been carried out to a high standard of workmanship by Don Creedon, using proclima products, again supplied by CBP via Ecological Building Systems. We are very excited to see this project taking shape!
