JCA Architects JCA Architects is a mutil-disciplined Architecture and Conservation practice based in Cork city and Dunboyne, Co. Meath, Ireland. Meath.

Jack Coughlan Architects is an established multi-disciplinary architectural practice with offices in Cork City and Dunboyne, Co. Founded by Jack Coughlan in 1985 as an architectural practice producing contemporary designs, JCA has expanded to incorporate the disciplines of architectural conservation, retail and passive house design. The in-house expertise in all these areas allows JCA to provide full design and project management services from concept stage to completion. JCA is a vibrant practice with a broad skill base comprising architects, project managers, architectural conservation consultants, architectural technologists and graphic artists with supporting administration providing a comprehensive and rapid design and execution process. JCA is an award-winning RIAI Grade 1 Conservation Practice having developed a wide range of experience in various areas of conservation and provides an exceptionally high level of expertise within the practice. A fundamental first step is the understanding of the building. Once achieved, JCA can approach a design or intervention with confidence, based on many years of conservation experience in combination with the ethos of contemporary design that the practice is committed to. Indeed, JCA’s strength has been found to be a combination of conservation with a contemporary intervention. JCA projects establish the credibility of its design philosophy: contemporary, appropriate, sensitive, functional, sustainable and economical. Many of these criteria can only be fully tested by interaction with the end-user. As the client’s role has a major influence on the design outcome, the management of that relationship is critical. JCA has a very strong track record where, for an architectural practice, it has a significant repeat business. Retail is one area where JCA has established a strong client relationship over a decade, with repeat projects in Ireland, Germany, Holland, Austria and Belgium. This body of work has resulted in JCA building up a wide base of experience and expertise in the ever changing retail design field. Our work in Europe is undertaken in collaboration with local partners, design team colleagues, contractors and specialist sub-contractors and carried out by teams led by a Project Director who has hands on delivery of the project. JCA’s commitment to sustainability includes appropriate site planning, selection of Green Rated materials, careful design of the building envelope, passive and active energy conservation and generation, use of renewable energy sources, optimising natural ventilation and daylight, water conservation and harvesting, air tightness testing and thermal imaging of buildings.

We are delighted to celebrate the opening of Primark Parma, another exciting project designed and delivered by JCA Architects as part of our longstanding partnership with Primark across Europe and our 105th New Store!!

Located at Parma Promenade, the new open-air shopping destination in Emilia-Romagna, the store provides an impressive 3,480 m² of retail space, representing an investment of €8 million and creating 120 new jobs for the local community.

The opening represents another significant milestone for Primark’s continued growth in Italy

For JCA Architects, Parma represents another addition to our growing portfolio of Primark stores delivered across Ireland and Europe. We are proud to continue supporting Primark’s ambitious expansion programme, working collaboratively from design development and technical coordination through to the successful delivery of each store.

The Parma opening also comes at an exciting time for Primark, following the recent opening of its 500th store globally — an incredible achievement and one we are delighted to celebrate alongside them.

A huge congratulations to everyone at Primark, our own JCA Architects team, and all of the consultants, contractors and project partners whose collaboration and hard work helped bring Primark Parma to life.

Another store delivered. Another milestone reached. And another proud addition.

JCA Architects are delighted to have worked in partnership with Primark on the delivery of its new store in Ostrava, marking Primark’s fourth store in the Czech Republic and its first in the Moravian-Silesian Region.

Following an investment of approximately €9 million, the new store spans 3,100 m² of retail space across two floors and has created around 100 new jobs for the local community.

Primark’s growth in the Czech Republic has been met with fantastic enthusiasm. Long queues greeted the opening of its first Czech store on Prague’s Wenceslas Square in 2021, with the Brno opening also attracting significant attention. We’re confident Ostrava will be another very welcome addition to the region.

For JCA, it’s another milestone in our long-standing relationship with Primark and another exciting addition to our growing portfolio of retail projects across the Czech Republic and Europe.

A huge congratulations to Primark, JCA team and to everyone involved in bringing the Ostrava store from design through to completion.

Today’s UK-Ireland Summit took place at Fota House, Fota Island, Co. Cork

Fota House was originally built as a Hunting Lodge c.1760, altered and enlarged as the main residence of Smith-Barry family c.1825 by Architect Sir Richard Morrison and William Vitruvius Morrison.

JCA Architects have overseen four phases of conservation works over the last five years for the , with as main contractor. The works have included the repair and renewal of the main slated roofs to main house and pavilions, with full re-slating using the salvaged existing slate, and the renewal of complex lead parapet gutters, all under a specialist temporary roof to protect the house and the works. Two phases of conservation rendering and stonework repairs to main house and pavilions using advanced stone repair techniques of the delicate Cork white limestone, and the replacement of cement-based renders in favour of ruled out lime flat work, as well as specialist stucco repair to the long gallery. The most recent phase has included roof and render repairs to north wing including the rare octagonal game larder.
