πŸ›οΈ UCC Cooperage – Roof Repairs

The UCC Cooperage building is situated within the former Irish Distillers site at North Mall, Cork. Built circa 1900, it formed part of the original Wise’s Distillery. 🏭

Its distillery use ended when UCC and the Mercy Hospital purchased the entire distillery site in 2004. UCC subsequently converted the Cooperage building for use by the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences. πŸŽ“πŸ”¬

The Cooperage consists of four traditional β€œA” frame roofs and three valleys, which had reached the end of their service life. While the primary old-pine trusses were found to be in sound condition, a quantity of secondary timbers and the external slated roof covering were beyond repair. πŸͺ΅πŸ

The condition of the existing slating was poor and was replaced with natural slates, while the valley gutters were renewed and the original iron rainwater goods were carefully restored. πŸ”¨πŸ§±

A particularly interesting feature uncovered during the restoration was the presence of a horsehair layer between the roof battens and the tongue-and-groove (T&G) boarding. 🐴 The material required testing due to the potential historic association with anthrax spores. Fortunately, testing confirmed that the material was negative for anthrax, allowing the conservation works to proceed safely. πŸ§ͺβœ…

The project successfully retained the character and historic fabric of this important former distillery building while renewing the roof structure and coverings for its continued use by UCC. πŸ›οΈπŸ”§

πŸ‚πŸŽ‰ What a fantastic Autumnfest! πŸŽͺ🎨

Last Sunday, we celebrated our 7th Annual Autumnfest on Douglas Street, organised by the Douglas St. Business Association. Once again, it was a huge success! πŸ₯³

Despite a little bit of rain 🌦️, we welcomed the same fantastic number of visitors who came along to enjoy food stalls, circus acts, children’s games, face painting, storytelling, music and, of course, the simple joy of meeting friends and neighbours on Douglas Street completely free of cars! πŸš—βŒπŸ™Œ

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, took part, supported the event and helped make it such a wonderful celebration of our community. 🌟🍁

Successful Infill Projects – Example 3: Rural Cottage, West Cork 🏑🌿

Restored by a retired architect, this wonderful rural cottage is a great example of what can be achieved through thoughtful conservation and sensitive restoration. ✨
We were involved as conservation architects. Our countryside is rich with examples of old cottages of this style and this is a wonderful example of what can be done.

🏘️ Successful Infill Projects – Example 2: Old Blackrock Road

πŸ“ Just beyond the South Infirmary.

We were not involved in this project, but we congratulate the designers who have set a standard for this terrace which, hopefully, others will follow. πŸ‘

Thoughtful infill can make a positive contribution to our existing streetscapes while respecting the character of the surrounding buildings. 🏑✨

Successful Infill Projects – Example 1
33, 34 Grand Parade, Cork City
From time to time, we see infill projects that set a positive example for others to follow.
We were involved in the restoration of these two commercial properties, completed approximately four years ago, helping to enhance the existing streetscape. πŸ›οΈβœ¨

We are delighted to receive planning consent for this new house in Baltimore, West Cork.

The design and choice of materials provide a contemporary look while reflecting elements of the traditional cottage vernacular, all on a very special site that offers unparalleled views of the bay and surrounding islands.

As part of our Architecture Archive series, we are revisiting projects that have shaped our practice and contributed to Cork's built environment over the decades. For this post, there is also pages included from "Cork's Modern Architect: The Work of Frank Murphy"

The following is an extract from Conor English’s book on Frank Murphy.
β€œIn 1955 Frank Murphy was chosen by the Presentation Sisters to design a convent, chapel and primary school in the new and ever-expanding Cork suburb of Ballyphehane. The subsequent design solution was a two storied, short, horizontal building with a variety of surface textures, with neat timber and brick detailing.”

This building which includes brick and large glazed timber windows and decorative timber panelling has references to the Modernist style and to Alvar Alto’s work which he greatly admired.
