The one question nobody asks before signing up for solar is probably the one that matters most.

Not the price. Not the brand. What's actually covered in the warranty.

Sig Energy and Huawei batteries are very similar pieces of kit. Huawei comes with 15 years as standard and Sig Energy with 10, and you can add another 5 on top if you want the extra cover. Inverters from both come with 10 years.

If something does go wrong, the warranty doesn't just cover the repair, it covers the cost of reinstalling it too.

Ask those questions before you ask anything else.

Your bill went up again this year. Did you notice? Of course you did.

People think the inverter does all the work. It doesn't.

The panels make the electricity. The inverter converts it into something your house can use, so think of it as a translator, not the power plant. The battery stores what you don't use so it's there when you need it. Then it all ends up in your home.

The inverter's doing the big brain job, but it's only one part of the system.

Future Is Bright EP 7

Three or four companies went for this estate. They picked us.

A few neighbours put together their own committee and had a few companies in to talk to them. Lenny went out, sat down with them and answered every question they had. No script, no pitch.

Then we went house to house and got the real bills, every single one. A house full of teenagers next door to someone living alone can't have the same system on the roof, so every house got sized for them.

Worried about servicing your solar panels? Here's what you actually need to think about.

The panels need nothing, the rain does the cleaning. The inverter doesn't need servicing either, just keep an eye on your app.

The only thing that costs people money is ignoring a fault light and not telling anybody. If something flags up, don't ignore it.

Your battery and your inverter don't last the same length of time, and they don't come with the same warranty.

Sig Energy battery: 10 years. Huawei battery: 15 years. Inverter: 10 years on both brands.

Different parts, different lifespans. Knowing the difference means nothing catches you out down the line.
