Why Holly? 🌳

The holly tree is probably one we all recognise, but there’s a lot behind it.

Evergreen, resilient and long-lived, it provides shelter and food for wildlife and has been part of our landscape and culture for centuries.

For us, it represents many of the things we value at Holly Arboriculture: resilience, longevity and looking after trees for the long term.

So when we spotted this one today, it felt like a good excuse to share a little bit about the tree behind our name. 😊

An unusual addition to Eyre Square yesterday👀

Our anemometer attracted plenty of curiosity while we carried out a DynaRoot test on one of the trees.

The equipment records wind speed and direction while sensors measure how the tree responds to natural wind. This allows us to assess root stability without excavation or damage to the tree.

So many people stopping to ask what we were doing.

A great couple of days at the Arboricultural Association Conference in Lancaster University

Lots of interesting talks, but three sessions in particular stood out:

🌳 Ioan Stetca on restoring heavily pruned mature trees rather than automatically looking at removal and replacement.

🌡️ Manuel Esperon on how different urban tree species respond to extreme heat and drought, and what that could mean for the trees we plant in our cities in the future.

🦺 Mark Roberts on what actually happens after a serious workplace accident, from the investigation and insurance process to the impact on the business and the people involved. A very thought-provoking session.

And of course, one of the best parts of these events is getting the chance to catch up with and meet other people working in arboriculture.

Thanks to the Arboricultural Association for another great conference.

A lovely start to the 2026 Arboricultural Association conference with the tree planting ceremony on Sunday 🌳

Paul is there representing Holly Arboriculture, catching up with fellow arborists, making new connections and, no doubt, talking plenty about trees!

Looking forward to a great couple of days with the Arboricultural Association.

Great to see Glanmire Park progressing to public consultation 🌳

It is great to be part of this project, working with AECOM and Cork County Council providing arboricultural input.

Looking forward to seeing it all come together!

Ever wondered what the inside of a tree actually looks like? 🌳

This is the 3D model produced from our sonic tomography testing of this mature Copper Beech.

We tested the tree at two different heights, 60 cm and 80 cm above ground level, allowing us to build a better picture of what is happening internally.

But producing the images is only part of the process.

The next step is interpreting the results alongside what we observed during the tree assessment, before reaching our conclusions and making appropriate management recommendations.

We’ll share those conclusions in our next post.

But before we do… what do you see? 👀

What stands out to you or surprises you about the results?

I’d be really interested to hear your interpretation before we share ours.

Ever heard of a tree having like a CT scan? 🌳🩻

We’ve had quite a few questions about sonic tomography recently, particularly about what the test actually involves.

So, for anyone who hasn’t seen one carried out before, swipe through and we’ll take you through the process.

Sonic tomography allows us to investigate what is happening inside a tree when a visual assessment identifies something that needs a closer look.

And yes… the colourful tomography image everyone has been asking about is coming next 👀 stay tuned for next post with the results.

This mature Copper Beech needed further investigation before any management decisions could be made.

Using sonic tomography, we were able to build a picture of the tree’s internal condition without causing damage. Much like a CT scan in human medicine, it helps us gather the information needed to make informed, evidence-based decisions.

Every tree tells a story. Sometimes you just need to look beneath the surface. 🌳

Remember the tree from our previous post? This mature Copper Beech showed evidence of decay at the base in the initial tree assessment. Although the tree showed no signs of physiological decline or imminent failure, its prominence and location at the front of the property meant that further investigation was recommended before any management decisions were made.

That’s where sonic tomography comes in…

Not every tree assessment ends with a visual inspection.

Sometimes, further investigation is needed before any management recommendations can be made.

For this tree, we carried out sonic tomography to better understand its internal condition.

We’ll show you how it works tomorrow.
