This project to restore a quarry tiled floor at a property in the Terenure suburb of Dublin was one of our dirtier jobs. It had previously been covered with vinyl which had been secured in place with adhesive and levelled with cement.

These tiles at a home in Palmerstown may look like Slate but they are in fact Porcelain which is a very resilient material. Unlike Slate however Porcelain is impermeable and as a result doesn’t usually need much maintenance other than a light periodic clean. Grout on the other hand traps dirt due to its rough cementitious surface and we tend to find its the grout that needs attention with this type of flooring.

I thought you might be interested in these pictures of a beautiful Victorian tiled hallway I was asked to review at a period property in my hometown of Clondalkin. It’s probably difficult to appreciate from the photos on this page as the tiles look to be in good condition but there was an issue with salts appearing that the owner was unhappy with.
