How do you assess storm damage across forests around the country, while also understanding what has happened at individual sites?

That is the challenge Trevor McHugh, Managing Director - Commercial of Veon Ltd, will discuss this Friday, 9th of October, at Drone Space Ireland’s “Elevated Thinking – Drones for a Changing Ireland”.

Taking place at IADT, Dún Laoghaire, the event brings together people exploring the practical uses and future of drone technology in Ireland.

Trevor’s presentation, “Elevating Environmental Stewardship”, will focus on Veon’s rapid deployment of drones to complement satellite imagery analysis following storm damage to forest portfolios nationwide.

He will explore the need to assess damage from landscape scale, down to localised areas, while providing evidence for reports to clients, regulators and other relevant stakeholders.

We look forward to sharing this experience and discussing how these technologies can support environmental stewardship and forest management.

A Sincere Thank You to Everyone Who Continue to Fight the Slievenamon Wildfire

In recent weeks, we have all seen the shocking images of the Irish landscape burning at Slievenamon. Despite the determined efforts of the Irish Air Corps , Tipperary Fire and Rescue Service, Coillte personnel, private helicopter operators, contractors, farmers and others working on the ground, the devastating impact on the natural landscape is already evident.

Veon wishes to express its sincere gratitude to everyone involved in battling this fire.

Those responding to the emergency worked long, demanding shifts in difficult conditions, confronting an unpredictable wildfire while seeking to protect people, homes, private property, forests, and important natural habitats.

Some criticism of the response has appeared publicly. However, it is important to recognise the reality faced by the teams on the ground. While others observed events from a distance, these men and women were working on the front lines, in extremely challenging conditions, doing everything within their power to contain the blaze and limit further damage.

Their courage, professionalism and determination deserve our respect and appreciation.

To the Defence Forces Irish Air Corps personnel, firefighters, Coillte teams, helicopter crews, contractors, farmers, local residents and everyone else who contributed to the response, Veon offers its sincere thanks.
We also extend our gratitude to those who have responded to the other wildfires and land fires that have occurred across Ireland in recent months.
Thank you for your commitment, resilience, and determination to protect Ireland’s communities, forests, and natural environment.

Veon ecologists undertaking a Mammal Survey in County Kildare encountered a variety of different species including a shy Otter, a Jay, Hare, deer badger, fox and pheasant.

The Irish countryside is rich in wildlife, with foxes, hares, and badgers moving quietly through farmland at dusk. Along streams, otters hunt, and woodlands host red squirrels, bats, and countless insects that sustain the wider ecosystem. Mammal surveys play an important role in recording and helping to protect species which contribute to the living tapestry which inspires us all.

Projects that may impact the existing environment often require a mammal survey. These projects can include: Afforestation proposals, Thinning and Clearfelling operations, Road and infrastructural developments, Agriculture and land clearance, Wind-energy developments, Flood alleviation schemes, and Public and Private property developments.

A new Benchmark for Make-A-Wish Woodland

For over three decades, Make-A-Wish Ireland has brought sunshine into the lives of over 3,500 courageous children across the country. These wishes offer respite from hospital routines, doctors' visits, and treatments, instilling joy into young lives. The charity, a registered non-profit in Ireland, stands as an example of transparency and accountability, having earned the esteemed "triple lock" certification from Charities Institute Ireland.

A generous benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous, granted a legacy donation to Make-A-Wish Ireland so that the wishes of children living with life-threatening illnesses will continue. As a mark of gratitude to the anonymous donor, Susan McQuaid O'Dwyer, the CEO of Make-A-Wish Ireland, unveiled a bench to honour the donor in the Make-A-Wish Woodland in Richardstown, Co. Louth.

“This living native woodland will stand as a testament to the unbreakable spirit of the children and families we serve and this new bench will be used to reflect on the fragility of life and the wonderful generosity of caring people.”

Make-A-Wish already boasts an exemplary ESG program, fostering corporate partnerships with dedicated Irish businesses that passionately support and promote their life-transforming work. VEON, a company dedicated to forestry, ecology and the environment, were engaged to source, plant and manage 8,000 native Oak trees by Make-A-Wish at the designated site.

As the first charity partner of VEON's prestigious Climate Leadership Programme and one of the inaugural children's charities in Ireland to take affirmative environmental action, Make-A-Wish Ireland has laid the foundation for an even brighter, greener future. Embracing their sustainability charter, they ardently hope to invest in more woodland projects in the years ahead, leaving an enduring legacy for generations to cherish.
