Studio Notes

Before a project becomes a drawing, it begins with understanding.

In the studio, sketching is not only about making ideas visible. It is part of how we think through the client’s needs, discuss possibilities with the team, and shape the first direction of a project together.

Every line carries a process of reading, questioning, and refining before the space moves forward.

𝐓𝐎𝐊𝐎 𝐊𝐎𝐏𝐈 𝐁𝐀𝐍𝐘𝐔𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐈 Some spaces are shaped by what came before them.

Located in Kayutangan, one of Malang’s historic commercial districts, Toko Kopi Sumber Rejeki sits within a streetscape shaped by old shophouses and a long history of everyday trade.

The project works with that existing character rather than starting over. An old shophouse becomes the foundation for a new coffee space while its architectural context remains part of the experience.

A closer look at how history can become the starting point for something new.

A closer look at Handall Coffee through the owner’s perspective.

This conversation reflects how the project has been used, maintained, and experienced since 2019. More than a finished space, Handall Coffee becomes a project that continues to show its structure, durability, and ability to last over time.

The People Behind

Behind every space, there are people who stay close to the process.

For Shintya Della, Senior Interior Designer at Arya Samodra Architects, design is not only about what is seen, but also about what is felt through proportion, material rhythm, lighting, and the details that quietly shape a room.

A closer look at the person behind the process.

Behind every space, there is a way of seeing.

For NOOMA, the process began not only with understanding the brand, but also with reading the character of the existing space. Through an adaptive reuse approach, the project became a way of carrying something old into a new experience.

A closer look at the principal thinking behind the project.

NGL House Ambience

A house is not only understood through its form.

At NGL House, the experience is found in quieter moments: natural light entering the room, air moving through the space, shaded corners, and the calm rhythm of everyday gathering.

Designed with a Tropical Modern approach, NGL House lets comfort happen naturally.

A closer look at how the space breathes, holds, and welcomes.

Site In Sight: Arya Samodra Architects Office

Before it became the office of Arya Samodra Architects, this space already carried a story.

First made by Arya’s father, the office was later continued into a working studio with a new rhythm and purpose. Its compact scale is not treated as a limitation, but as a way to think more carefully about how air moves, how light enters, and how each material can hold meaning.

Between bamboo weaving, recycled materials, transparent details, and a more industrial character, the space becomes a quiet meeting point between what was inherited and what is being built today.

A closer look at how a space can be continued, reworked, and given a soul of its own.

Forenoon
Malang, East Java

Area Scale: 375 m²
Building Scale: 225 m²

Forenoon is shaped as a compact everyday space in Malang, where a clear urban frontage opens into a warmer interior rhythm.

From the outside, the facade feels composed and direct. Inside, the atmosphere shifts through timber tones, layered lighting, indoor greenery, and a ceiling grid that gives structure to the room.

The project brings together coffee, pause, and daily movement in one space: calm enough to stay, clear enough to function, and warm enough to feel familiar.
