Roatán Power Notes. ¿Cuánto vale 1 kW de paneles?
Según el modelo solar PVGIS de la Unión Europea, 1 kW de paneles en Roatán, orientado al sur con unos 15° de inclinación, produce alrededor de 1,633 kWh al año. Con la tarifa actual de RECO fijada por la CREE (sep–nov 2026), esa energía vale unos L14,600 al año a la tarifa de más de 150 kWh (L8.9515/kWh). A la tarifa de los primeros 150 kWh (L6.1103/kWh) vale unos L10,000.
Sin noticias esta semana. La exención de impuestos para equipo solar de la nueva ley de energía todavía espera su reglamento.

Roatán Power Notes. What is one kilowatt of panels worth?
The EU's PVGIS solar model estimates that 1 kW of panels on Roatán, facing south at about 15°, produces around 1,633 kWh per year. At RECO's current price set by CREE (Sep–Nov 2026), that energy is worth about $540 a year at the above-150 kWh rate (about $0.33/kWh). At the first-150 kWh rate (about $0.23/kWh) it is worth about $370.
Converted at the B*H exchange rate of L26.90 per dollar (Oct 13).
No news this week. The solar tax exemption in the new energy law still awaits its regulation.

Solar Demystified. Does the perfect tilt matter?
On Roatán the sun is high, so the ideal angle is low, about 15°. The good news: a south-facing roof anywhere from about 5° to 30° loses less than 3% of yearly production compared with "perfect." Even flat panels lose under 3%.
What matters more: which way the panels face, and shade. A north-facing array loses about 11%, and a shadow from a tree or wall can cost much more.
So mounting flush to a good roof is usually the smart move. Keeping panels clear of shade is where the real gains are.

Solar Demystified. Which way the array faces matters.
On Roatán, the strong side is south. East still produces in the morning, and west in the afternoon. North is the side to avoid, because it sees the least sun. A good design uses the clear south, east, or west roof. It does not fill the north side just because there is space. This is the start. The next Demystified post can go into tilt and shade.

Roatán Power Notes. Where the RECO rate has been going.
CREE adjusts RECO's residential energy price every quarter. For the first 150 kWh, it went from L5.63 in December 2025 to L6.11 this quarter. Above 150 kWh, it went from L8.25 to L8.95. Both are up about 8.5%.
That is the energy price, not the whole bill. The current price runs through November 30. Every kilowatt-hour your panels make is one you don't buy at that price.

On a Sol-Ark, the house is on backup with whatever battery is installed. One battery is a real start. It decides how long the backup lasts, not whether the house is backed up. You can add more later.

Roatán Power Notes. What changed, and what did not.
CREE set RECO's residential energy price from September 1 through November 30 at L6.1103 per kWh up to 150 kWh, and L8.9515 above that. That is the energy price, not the whole bill. Most of RECO's power is still LPG.
On Guanaja, which is ENEE and not RECO, the average tariff fell on August 1.
A new energy law was published on September 30. The pause on rate increases applies to ENEE, not to the RECO bill. The part that may matter later is a reported exemption from sales tax and import duty on residential panels, inverters, and batteries. The limits are not set yet.

Solar Demystified. Myth: any electrician can wire solar.

House wiring and a hybrid solar system are not the same job. Panels and batteries are DC. The grounding, the disconnects, and how the inverter ties into the panel are what keep a fault from becoming a fire or a dead system. Salt air on Roatán is hard on lugs and conduit even when the roof looks perfect. The panels do not fix a loose connection in a humid wall.

Solar Demystified. Myth: a hurricane destroys the panels.

Modern panels are tested for high wind, often 140 mph and up. That number is the panel, not a promise the roof will hold. What usually fails is the mounting, or how it's anchored, not the glass. That's why we use premium aluminum racking and anchors. Salt air is hard on cheap brackets long before a hurricane shows up. On Roatán, Utila, and Guanaja, the hardware is what has to last.
