Choi Kai Yau Residence, United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Sited atop the modernist United College campus at CUHK, the Choi Kai Yau Hostel comprises 125 double bedrooms and shared communal amenities within a 6,343 m² floor area.

Guided by three principles — connection to nature, spatial diversity and pe*******on, and architectural heritage with contemporary essence — the project provides a nurturing home accommodating both introverts and extroverts.

The layout utilizes two courtyards to adapt to the compact topography, while maximizing peripheral areas. Placed to suit their public-private nature, common rooms front the campus square to dialogue and buffer, while dorms face outward for distant views of tranquil nature.

The design emphasizes tectonic clarity and authentic structural expression, employing an open framework to intertwine architecture, daily life, and nature. Courtyards, corridor-end windows, open-air reading gallery brings in natural light, ventilation and views of nature. Within this structure, residential student life becomes a dynamic promenade of shifting spatial dimensions and alternating landscape vistas.

Thresholds between inside and outside, or between distinct programs, are carefully articulated through material shifts, geometry, color, and strategic openings. These zones are intentionally designed to function as active moments of transition and spontaneous encounter.

Nature to nurture

The dormitory is conceived as a permeable framework that intertwines architecture and daily life with nature.

Carved into the building’s volume, the north courtyard is defined by bold steps and a projection screen, for outdoor gatherings and cinema screenings. The south courtyard has a more intimate scale for the female dorms. Ivy will be planted on the screen wall to form an secluded garden, and to purify and cool the air.

The courtyard opens to the sky, and bring cross-ventilation and daylight deep into the corridors.
