The rock art at Bushmans Kloof was created by the San people also known as Bushmen, who were the indigenous hunter-gatherer people of Southern Africa using natural pigments such as ochre (a natural earth pigment ranging from yellow to red) and charcoal, mixed with binding agents typically animal fats or plant juices to create a durable paint that would adhere to the rock surfaces. The art found in the region dates back thousands of years, with some estimates suggesting that the paintings could be as old as 10,000 years. They offer a glimpse into the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of the San people, depicting a variety of subjects including animals, human figures, and intricate patterns that hold significant cultural and historical importance.
