Designing systems to enhance natural beauty

BAISHUIZHAI WATERFALL SCENIC AREA CONCEPTUAL PLANNING AND DESIGN COMPETITION

The Baishuizhai Waterfall is China’s tallest waterfall, with a 430 meter water drop. It’s an important natural icon for Guangzhou. The waterfall is intriguing for many reasons. From far way it looks like one, but up closer one can see the variety in shape and spaces it has created over the course of thousands of years. The natural beauty of the waterfall is associated with many things, of which the main story is that of a fairy, dancing between the hills.

The beauty of the waterfall is recognized but could be experienced by many more people. It could stimulate tourism and active leisure in the area and at the same increase the attractivity of the Guangzhou region. The ambition is to become a 5A touristic destination. Accessibility forms an important challenge to solve, in this steep topography: all age groups should be able to get to the waterfall. And the visitor flow should be more constant, day, night, all year long.

We do not see our work solely as the making of ‘buildings’, nor of just forming landscapes, but we strive to find a harmonious intermingling of the needs of nature and culture. We think this proposal for a new community center against the hills is indicative of this agenda.

We just submitted for an ideas competition [more on that later] and were remined of something we did a few years back. [and got editor's pick and honorable mention]:

A New Polder Model
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…”
- Dickens
“… the best way to see the way forward, is to look back at where you came from.”
– us.

Values
In the Dutch context, top-down has long framed the bottom up. Dijks were lines that formed collective protection, which allowed for great individual freedoms. Close proximity to water led to international colonization. This ultimately led to international industries and factories. Ultimately leading to abandonment and squatter culture. Post war housing needs paved way for projects like OMA’s minimalist linear housing models. These lead to the desire of citizens to express themselves in public spaces.

“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.”
-Marcus Tullius Cicero
Knowledge is not about libraries or books or the internet. The accumulation of knowledge is essentially the foundation of civilization. Libraries have traditionally been the locations to store the information. Now libraries have the opportunity to be much more. They are the hubs to access, share, and to discuss knowledge. They no longer are mainly about storage and preservation. They are about ease of access and about gathering of people.
Further, the nature of how the information is shared has changed. With the advent of digital technology space no longer needs to be spatially ordered. Spaces can be much more dynamic and flexible, allowing for users to shape them more freely. The users themselves can form new ways of gathering and sharing knowledge with each other. The library is their tool to be interpreted.

In the Greek Islands, one can see the impact of a robust water based [ferry/pier] transport infrastructure network. Similar to the Greater Bay Area, the Greek Islands heritage of linkages to these networks is evident. But we still have much to learn from their multiple layers of networks. Particularly from their leveraging it for sustainable development and water based TOD models.

Our Founder Jason was recently in Kolkata, India. This is a hub for the yearly Durga Puja Festival. The preparations are year round. The 'idols' for the event are composed of clay, hay and paint. After the event these are disolved back into the river, returning them from where they came. The community that makes these pandals can be visited to see the production. This cyclical system of making for a temporal event is very inspiring to how we think of how are cities are composed of people, places, and cultures.
