RICHARDS BASMAJIAN: The First 40 Years | Chapter One: 1987 to 1996
Forty years ago, the idea of setting up our own design practice seemed like a sound one. How hard could it be?
From a flash of inspiration in the summer of 1986, plans proceeded apace and, by the beginning of the new year, we were up and running in our own studio with the first few completed projects soon to follow.
Four decades, a significant body of work and 38 Design Awards later, we are pleased to present projects from each of our first 40 years that highlight the scale, diversity and quality of our portfolio.
We will be uploading these in four tranches, each covering a decade. We begin with the first 10 years, 1987 to 1996 which included everything from an American style diner in Lan Kwai Fong to an airline ticketing office, law firms and multi-national corporations, to a bespoke business centre and a banquet hall in Singapore. Along the way, we also provided the interior design for the government agency charged with bringing to fruition Hong Kong’s new airport at Chek Lap Kok.
