The restoration of Ambler continues in Rio Dulce. 🌱
With a new white-metal bearing freshly cast, the propeller shaft is inspected, rectified, and carefully matched to its renewed housing. Precision machining and patient installation are bringing the whole system back into alignment. ⚙️
Day by day, we are getting closer to splash day. 💦

Episode Two of Ambler’s restoration.
After discovering wear in the propeller shaft bearing, we begin the process of casting a new white-metal lining. The old material is melted out, the bronze shells prepared, and fresh babbitt poured using simple tools and a custom mold.

This design reflects an earlier approach to engineering: strong, durable, and made to be renewed rather than replaced. With basic techniques, traditional materials, and a willingness to work a little differently, these systems can still be restored today — especially when the boat is as special as Ambler, a 1928 RNLI lifeboat.

✨ We continue the teaser carousel series — from open horizons to one of the most demanding passages on Earth.

Through the 1980s, Stan and Cora sailed south along the Atlantic coast of South America using only a sextant, paper charts, and patience. No GPS, no electronics — just daily sights, handwritten notes, and trust in the boat. Weeks turned into months as Ambler carried them through remote anchorages, long passages, and the slow approach to Cape Horn.

In 1987, they finally rounded the Cape — officially leaving the Atlantic behind and entering the Pacific Ocean.

More chapters from the voyage are coming soon. Follow us to continue discovering Ambler’s history.

This chapter features illustrations by Venezuelan artist — visit his page to explore more of his incredible work.
