ATHENS P4ARCHITECTURE WORSKHOP

Converting two old warehouses to an architecture studio

“When you’re in the studio painting, there are a lot of people in there with you - your teachers, friends, painters from history, critics [...] and one by one if you’re really painting, they walk out. And at the end, if you’re really painting you walk out too.”
Philip Guston

Unifying and converting two old shops into architectural office posed an exceptionally challenging task. This challenge arose from our desire for the resulting space structure to reflect and crystallize the working methods and compositional methodology we follow (or at least the one we aspire to follow).

In terms of spatial arrangement, the architectural office is organized into three levels. At the underground level, a subterranean and uncanny realm, we find the model/fabrication workshop and the material/texture library.
On the upper level, bathed in natural light and transparency, a linear table accommodates the necessary computers and design tools for the drawing and visual procustion.

The two realms mentioned above converge, shape-shift, and evolve on the ground level, directly connecting with the city. The prototypes, sketches, and diagrams unite and become the basis for daily discussions on the development of projects and the ideas that occupy our minds.
A slanted wooden theater brings together all the levels and separates the “square” of composition from the auxiliary and storage spaces of the office.

ASCENDING AGORA

A Vertical Congress Centre Between a Public Plaza and a Rooftop Garden

Last summer, we developed a collaborative proposal for the international competition for the Congress Center of Elche, with the SOCOTEC Group( )as consultants, alongside our colleagues and friends Francisco Colom (.colom )and Anna Fernández, whose insight into the local and territorial context was decisive for the development of the project.

The proposal reinterprets the congress center as a vertical civic structure embedded within the city. Rejecting the introverted model of isolated complexes, it organizes publicly accessible spaces in a vertical sequence, enabling continuous interaction between programmed activities and open-ended uses. As the building rises, auditoriums progressively decrease in size while public and collective spaces expand, establishing a gradient from formal assembly to civic openness.

At ground level, a public plaza establishes a direct relationship with the urban fabric. Above, a system of horizontally arranged auditoriums and foyer spaces is connected by a continuous ramp, culminating in an elevated roof garden conceived as a collective space and an emerging urban ecosystem.

Informed by the vertical presence of the palm tree in Elche’s predominantly horizontal landscape and the terraced geometries of regional quarries, the project is structured through Mediterranean spatial archetypes - stoa, threshold, atrium, theater, plaza, and garden - framing the building as an adaptable, compact, and environmentally responsive civic infrastructure.

Three linear vacation houses in Rhodes, Greece

“The landscape is not merely a backdrop; it is a way of being.” — O. Elytis
This proposal concerns the design of three independent holiday residences on a small plot located on the eastern side of the island of Rhodes—an area of exceptional natural beauty, yet lacking a coherent architectural identity. The project investigates the optimal typological configuration of each residence in relation to the landscape, orientation, and key visual perspectives.

The architectural design of the typical unit was guided by the following objectives:

To articulate the concept of Mediterranean living through a sequence of communal, private, and non-programmatic spaces. A linear progression of outdoor, indoor, semi-outdoor, atrium, and enclosed garden areas generates the spatial conditions characteristic of Mediterranean life, all integrated within an elongated residential form.
To elevate the residential structure on a raised plinth, allowing the private bedrooms to be distributed across multiple levels within the resulting cross-section. This strategy reduces the building’s footprint and minimizes its impact on the natural terrain.
To utilize locally sourced materials in the construction of the building envelope. A continuous U-shaped wall, built from porous limestone, encloses and shelters the residence. The longitudinal edges of this wall are staggered to frame diagonal views toward the sea and enhance spatial depth.
Through this approach, the cabanon linéaire is formed—a linear sequence of interior, exterior, and transitional spaces.

Following a modular logic, the unit is repeated three times. Each iteration is slightly offset from the previous one to optimize views, enhance privacy, and improve circulation and access. The result is a cohesive architectural ensemble in which the wild Mediterranean landscape permeates the site and becomes an integral part of the composition.
