Aπεβίωσε στις 23 Μαΐου 2021, σε ηλικία 92 ετών, ο λαμπρός Βραζιλιάνος Αρχιτέκτονας Paulo Mendes da Rocha. We mourn the loss of Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928-2021), Brazilian architect, educator and 2006 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
While most of his works were realized in São Paulo, he was recognized internationally for his buildings and approach. Inspired by the principles and language of modernism, each of his projects expressed energy and optimism through his bold use of simple materials and a deep understanding of the poetics of space, all with a responsibility and service to humankind.
Upon his acceptance of the Pritzker Prize, Mendes da Rocha remarked, “I hope that this flame will be always lit so that architecture can be seen as a unique and indispensable way of knowledge for mankind to develop in the future. I believe that as we build contemporary cities, we are realizing human beings’ highest desires.”
The 2006 Jury stated in their citation, “Whether individual homes or apartments, to a church, sports stadium, art museum, kindergarten, furniture showroom or public plaza, Mendes da Rocha has devoted his career to the creation of architecture guided by a sense of responsibility to the inhabitants of his projects as well as to a broader society.”
Notable works include the Athletic Club of São Paulo (1957); Paulistano Athletic Club (1958); Chapel of Saint Peter, Campos de Jordão (1987); Forma Store (1987); Brazilian Museum of Sculpture (1988); Patriarch Plaza and Viaduct do Cha (1992); and the State Museum of São Paulo (1993).
He was a recipient of the Mies van der Rohe Prize for Latin American Architecture (2000), the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, La Biennale di Venezia (2016), Praemium Imperiale International Arts Award (2016), and the RIBA Gold Medal (2017). He taught for many years at the University of São Paulo, and extensively throughout South America and Europe.
