Some weeks ago, I was invited to review a paper on teaching atmosphere in design education, and I was immediately drawn to the premise. But as I read, I kept returning to one concern: atmosphere risks becoming too easily translated into categories, variables, and repeatable strategies.

Yet atmosphere is not only what we see, hear, touch, or measure. It is about how we feel. It emerges through the encounter between body, place, memory, culture, environment, and emotion.

We worry a great deal about what AI may teach, replace, or distort. But AI cannot teach a student how to feel a place. It cannot give them their own emotional response, memory, bodily awareness, or personal relation to space.

Perhaps the real pedagogical challenge is not to teach students how to produce atmosphere, but how to sense it, feel it, and understand what gives it meaning.

We speak of sustaining landscapes.
We speak of sustaining architecture.
But what does it mean to sustain an atmosphere?

Atmosphere belongs to that elusive territory between the material and the immaterial: something undeniably present, yet impossible to hold. Atmos—vapor, breath, air—suggests what surrounds us without becoming an object before us; sphere, a field, an enclosure, a world within which things come into relation. And somewhere within this constellation resonates ātman: breath, self, soul.*

Perhaps atmosphere begins precisely there: in what architecture cannot entirely materialize, measure, draw, preserve, or even name, yet what the body and the soul can grasp.

To sustain atmosphere is not necessarily to preserve an image of the past, nor an exercise in nostalgia, but to sustain the fragile relations through which inhabitation becomes attachment: between body and space, memory and matter, air and surface, light and shadow, presence and absence.

My recent engagement with Kinono, reflecting on the farming landscape of Tinos, brought me back to the island’s dovecotes.
An architectural typology with a long history — from Renaissance Italy and the gardens of monasteries and great estates, to the cultivated landscape of Tinos.

Here, architecture and necessity became one: shelter, food, trade, fertility. Their intricate façades carry geometric, religious and anthropological symbols, while the pigeons themselves provided both nourishment and valuable manure for the land.
Architecture, agriculture, symbolism and life — woven into one extraordinary relationship between humans, animals and landscape.

A living architecture, deeply rooted in place.
