We’ve always been happy to get involved sponsoring local football down the years. It isn’t easy for grassroots clubs that are all volunteer run battling rising costs and lack of support and facilities. For teams close to our hearts we try to help where we can. The 2024/25 season was no different as RAS sponsored both the Fleur De Lys FC seniors and Cascade u15s girls and what a season it was.
Fleur hit the ground running and were off to a strong start. They led the league early and remained top going into the Spring but a late wobble saw them drop off and the last few weeks turned into a three-horse race. With games in hand and points left to play for considered it was now out of Fleurs hands.
Something everyone at the club did have to look forward to was the final of the Gwent Cup and the first in the clubs history. The bus was packed with supporters that Saturday at the end of April and there was a real carnival atmosphere. Fleur led comfortably and were the better team. In the 2nd half news began filtering in from another game. Newbridge were losing to Rassau in their final league match meaning the league title had swung back dramatically in Fleur’s favour! Rassau did the unthinkable and by full time Fleur were double winners! It certainly is a funny ‘ol game. Huge celebrations in the Valley Tavern later to end a day that will always be remembered.
For Cascade u15s it was business as usual. The all-conquering girls team that have dominated their age group across South Wales for several years continued to beat all comers. Another incredible league season with a 100% win rate saw them successfully defend their South Wales league title. A cup final in May vs Barry Town at Ystrad Mynach COE. Another victory, another trophy, another double. I say it every year but for a team from a small valleys village youth club to dominate an area that spreads from Chepstow to Port Talbot really is incredible, and they just keep doing it!
It was no surprise then that 2 girls from the Cascade U15s, Isla Symes and Lily Mayne, were selected for the Boys & Girls Club of Wales squad to face Scotland. A fixture that takes place every year with the nations taking turns to host the match. In over 10 years of this fixture Wales had never beaten Scotland… until that Sunday at Aberystwyth. Wales 3 Scotland 0. RAS were match day sponsors of the two girls. Both played a massive part in the victory and made history.
An incredible season for both clubs and both girls. We are immensely proud of them all.
