🌞 Glorious day for tree work in York! 🌿

Making the most of half term, the Crew have been busy removing dead wood from trees at a local school. While we’d usually encourage retaining dead wood for its important biodiversity benefits, these particular trees are in a high-target area — right next to an outdoor classroom and sports pavilion.

Safety has to come first, especially in spaces used daily by students and staff, so this work helps keep the area safe while still respecting the wider environment as much as possible.

⚠️ Box Tree Caterpillar & Box Moth – Please Keep an Eye Out! ⚠️

The box tree caterpillar (and its adult form, the box moth) is becoming increasingly common and can completely strip box hedging and plants in a very short time.

👀 What to look for:
• Green caterpillars with black stripes
• Silk webbing and droppings inside box plants
• Rapid browning or defoliation
• White moths with dark brown edges flying around box plants (especially at dusk)

🌿 Why it matters:
These caterpillars feed almost exclusively on box (Buxus) and, if left untreated, can kill plants entirely.

🕰 Act early:
Regularly check plants from spring onwards. Early detection makes a huge difference.
