“Getting ready for hotter weather...
Issued on: 23 June 2026
Hello,
You may have seen that the Met Office have issued an extreme heat warning for large parts of the UK. The high temperatures could affect the electricity network and may cause power cuts, but don't worry, our teams are here to support you.
Our electricity network is currently operating as normal, and we want to reassure you that we are closely monitoring the weather. Our teams are ready and prepared to respond if anything does happen.
Although hot weather rarely causes disruption, there is still a small risk of unexpected power cuts. We recommend being prepared, just in case.
How you can prepare for a power cut:
Ensure you have a fully charged mobile phone, with a powerbank available if possible.
Follow up-to-date information on the weather on the Met Office website at www.metoffice.gov.uk.
Keep a torch and batteries to hand.
If you have medical equipment that uses electricity, make sure that you have a plan in place in case the power goes off. Speak to your medical provider for advice on what to do.
Have some food and drink available that doesnt require electricity to heat or prepare it.
A battery powered fan can help keep you cool.
Stay hydrated.
What to do if your power goes off:
Shut curtains or blinds and windows in the day - especially on sun-facing rooms.
Only open windows when it's cooler outside (late evening/morning) to let heat escape.
Close doors to hotter rooms to stop heat spreading.
Reduce heat inside by not using gas ovens or hobs - make cold food or eat light meals.
Ensure your fridge and freezer doors are kept closed as much as possible.
Stay hydrated and keep drinking water accessible.
