One ceiling light in the middle of the room is the worst way to light a living room.

It flattens everything and drops shadow exactly where you're sitting. Layered lighting — a couple of circuits, dimmable, lit where you actually use the room — costs less than most people expect and changes the room completely.

How many light switches does your living room have? One is a bad sign.

It’s what you don’t see that makes all the difference... and heat! Thermal imaging shows the invisible comfort of a fully functioning electric underfloor heating system. Using high-tech diagnostic tools ensures every mat and cable is heating evenly across your bathroom floor.

Cold showers belong in gym challenges, not your morning routine.

An electric shower pulls more current than almost anything else in the house. That means a dedicated circuit, the right cable size and RCD protection — not a spur off the nearest socket, which is what we still find more often than we'd like.

Has yours been running cold halfway through, or losing pressure? That's usually the first sign.

People always ask me, “What is the best EV charger?” ⚡🚗

That’s exactly what we’re looking at on this job. But before choosing the charger, there’s something equally important to consider: where and how it’s going to be installed.

This wall presents a bit of a challenge because we need to get the cable where it needs to go without causing unnecessary damage to the property.

A good EV charger installation isn't just about mounting the unit and connecting the cable. It's about planning the route, understanding the building, and finding the safest and cleanest way to get the job done.

What makes a good EV charger installation?
It isn't just the charger itself. The installation, cable route, protection, and suitability of the existing electrical system all matter.

If you're in Bristol or the surrounding areas and thinking about getting an EV charger installed, contact Live Line Electrical.

Old storage heaters are the most expensive way to heat a room in Britain.

They charge overnight on cheap rate, then leak most of it out by mid-afternoon — so you're cold in the evening when you actually want the heat, and you've paid for the privilege.

This one came out. A modern high-efficiency unit went in.

Still running storage heaters? What did last winter's electric bill look like?

If a breaker tripped right now, would you know which one to reset?

Most people wouldn't, because most boards were never labelled properly in the first place. Testing and labelling every circuit is the last hour of every job we do — and it's the hour that saves you standing in the dark with a phone torch.

Go and look at your board. Labelled, or guesswork?

Solving it one cable at a time.

There’s nothing more satisfying than taking a complex board setup and turning it into a neat, safe installation you can trust.

At first glance, this old outdoor lantern looked perfectly fine. ⚠️💡

The switch worked, the light came on, and nothing immediately stood out... until I looked at how it was wired.

The cable was hanging low from the window, supported by the incoming mains cable, and piggybacked from another light inside the property. It worked—but that doesn't mean it was installed safely.

Why is this a problem?
Electrical cables should be properly supported and installed using suitable methods. They shouldn't rely on other cables for support or be left hanging where they can be damaged.

Can an installation still be unsafe even if it works?
Absolutely. Many electrical issues aren't obvious until you inspect the installation closely.

If you're in Bristol or the surrounding areas and something about your electrics doesn't look quite right, contact Live Line Electrical for a professional inspection.

STOP ! Don't Use Plastic Bags for Electrcial Connection for your Mill Pond!

While restoring the mill pond, I opened up the old setup and found that someone had used a bag to cover the electrics. At first glance, it might seem like a decent waterproofing idea—but it actually trapped moisture, leading to rusted and unsafe connections

Why is moisture in electrics dangerous?
Water and electricity don’t mix—trapped moisture can cause corrosion, tripping, and even electrical fires. Outdoor electricals need proper protection, not quick fixes.

What’s the right way to protect garden electrics?
Always use weatherproof boxes, glands, and sealants rated for outdoor use. It keeps your system safe, efficient, and long-lasting.

Sometimes the best tool isn't a drill—it's an endoscope. 🔍⚡

Before drilling through the wall for this Hypervolt Home 3 EV charger installation, I used an inspection camera to look inside the cavity. No signs of concealed cables, so we could proceed with confidence.

The result? A clean hole exactly where we wanted it—just below the handrail, without damaging any hidden services.

Why use an endoscope before drilling?
It gives you a look inside the wall cavity, helping identify potential obstructions and reducing the risk of damaging concealed services.

Does it replace good planning?
No. It's another tool that supports careful measurements and experience, giving you even greater confidence before drilling.
