If there is one garden element that has fared badly this year, it is the lawn.

Long, hot weather, drought conditions and hosepipe bans have all conspired against it.

Now that weโ€™re moving into autumn, itโ€™s a good time to repair the damage and give tired lawns a chance to recover before winter.

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re offering a Lawn Repair Service โ€” ideal for lawns that have developed bare, thin or damaged areas over the summer.

๐ŸŒฑ Removing moss & thatch
๐ŸŒฑ Hollow-tine aeration
๐ŸŒฑ Repairing bare patches
๐ŸŒฑ Top dressing โ€” RHS-guided mix, Kent-sourced
๐ŸŒฑ Overseeding thin areas with a Kent-sourced, drought-tolerant lawn mix

The approach is based on RHS advice for lawn renovation and autumn recovery, using the right preparation and seed to give the lawn the best chance of establishing strongly.

Think of it as a gentle autumn spa visit for lawns that have had a tough summer.

A lot has happened in clients' gardens since these photos were taken in June.

Repeated hot spells and drought have certainly required extra plant care and garden management. The green shoots of recovery have definitely started, though we wonโ€™t know the full extent of the damage until next year.

Take heart from some of the real success stories in the garden. Roses, Knautia macedonica and Stachys byzantina have all performed well across multiple gardens.

Phlox paniculata, along with many supposedly drought-proof Rudbeckia, have fared less well.

So, how do we navigate our way through Autumn?

๐ŸŒฑ Boost the soil โ€“ improve water retention, structure and fertility with composts and organic mulches.

โœ‚๏ธ Pay careful attention to pruning โ€“ particularly shrubs and hedges. Observe the plants rather than simply reaching for the shears and cutting blindly.

๐ŸŒฟ Plan your planting โ€“ for any gaps that have appeared. Think opportunity, not regret.

Or simply WhatsApp The Gardener Of Kent and have it all taken care of for you.

๐ŸŒฟ Lovely little border transformation this morning. Lots of greenery to cut back to new growth. โœ‚๏ธ

It had probably been a little too long since our last visit, so we've now booked in a more regular slot for the client. ๐ŸŒฑ

The and have weathered the drought well, as has the Perovskia. The , as always, are doing a solid job. ๐ŸŒน

The border was also helped by our earlier work in the year with compost and mulch. ๐Ÿ‚ If you put the work in consistently, you reap the rewards. ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒฟ

Itโ€™s tough working in the garden at the moment.

The ground is bone dry, plants are showing the strain and even this poor dragonfly has given up. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

This is probably the hardest summer I've known for gardening. A lot of the usual jobs have to be approached differently โ€” deciding what really needs watering, what needs leaving alone, and what will actually benefit from being cut back.

That's why experience counts.

I think one of the stars of the show this year has been established roses. These floribunda roses in a regular client's garden have still put on a fine display for months, even as everything else is wilting around them.

Gardens are remarkably resilient.

The RHS mantra of โ€œright plant, right placeโ€ has never felt more relevant. Adapt to work with the conditions rather than fighting them.

Rain dance anyone? ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

๐ŸŒณ When Yew Want Perfection, But Need to Hedge Your Bets

This mature yew topiary has been shaped over many years and, if I'm honest, my perfectionist brain would love those two towers to be exactly the same size. ๐Ÿ˜…

But that's not always the right approach.

Chasing symmetry in a single visit would have meant cutting back into old wood, leaving bare patches that could take years to fill in.

Don't even get me started on the soft, fluffy growth that balloons out everywhere! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

โœ‚๏ธ Instead, I worked with the existing shape, restoring crisp lines while keeping the hedge full, healthy and in proportion.

๐ŸŒฟ Sometimes good gardening is knowing when not to chase perfection.

High summer in the garden is all about getting the best from the plants you already have.

Regular weeding, staking, deadheading, pruning and feeding all help borders stay colourful and healthy throughout the season. A little time spent now can keep plants flowering for weeks longer and prevent borders from becoming overgrown.

Whether your garden needs a one-off tidy-up or regular care, The Gardener Of Kent can help you get the most from it.

๐ŸŒธ Summer in the garden isn't just about flowers.

๐ŸŒฟ Keeping on top of weeding, pruning, cutting back and deadheading is just as important. Beautiful flowers can easily be hidden behind sprawling plants and weeds, taking away from the overall look of your garden.

๐ŸŒพ A fresh layer of Strulch also helps conserve moisture, suppress weeds and protect the soil during periods of hot weather and low rainfall. โ˜€๏ธ

๐Ÿชด If your borders are starting to get away from you in the summer heat, don't sweat it.

๐ŸŒฟ Calling All Hadlow College Horticulture Students ๐ŸŒฟ

Earn while you learn.

When I studied RHS Horticulture, I quickly realised that theory without practical implementation becomes the limiting factor. Understanding plant science is important; applying that knowledge in real gardens is what builds confidence and experience.

As the owner of The Gardener Of Kent, a successful gardening business based near Hadlow, I can offer hands-on horticultural experience across a variety of private gardens. This is an opportunity to develop practical skills alongside your studies while working with a wide range of plants, gardens and maintenance challenges.

I'm looking for students who are:

โœ… Reliable and punctual
โœ… Keen to learn
โœ… Interested in developing their horticultural knowledge
โœ… Able to work outdoors in all weathers
โœ… In possession of their own transport

Whether your interests lie in plant identification, pruning, border management, garden restoration or general horticultural practice, this could be an excellent opportunity to accelerate your career in horticulture while earning along the way.

๐Ÿ“ฉ If you'd like to find out more, please send me a message with a brief introduction and details of your current course and experience.
