Some hill ground is simply too steep to work safely with conventional machinery.
On this job in Wales, the farmer had already faced accidents and near misses trying to spread fertilizer using a tractor and quad, including reversing uphill to reduce the risk of tipping.
After some incidents, the farmer started to look for alternative ways of applying fertilizer on his steep fields. He decided to try aerial application by drone. The aim was to help boost grass growth so the sheep can remain grazing these fields into winter.
It was a very challenging job but it has been completed successfully without putting anybody's life in danger.
The neighbouring farmers noticed the drone on the hill and the calls started coming in. Some are already asking about future bracken spraying.
Today: fertilizer for winter grazing.
Tomorrow: potentially tackling bracken on slopes machinery can’t safely reach (subject to chemical approval).
