Hello March!

With the sun out and things starting to bloom, it’s the perfect time to get the garden back in shape. Here is a quick guide to getting that first mow right:
Wait for the "Dry and Firm" Test: Only mow if the ground is firm enough that you don't leave deep footprints or "squelch" as you walk. Mowing a waterlogged lawn can damage the soil structure and fragile roots.
The "One-Third" Rule: For your first few cuts, never remove more than one-third of the grass height.
Highest Blade Setting: Set your mower to its highest setting for the first pass. Keeping the blades high (aim for around 5–6 cm) gives the grass more surface area to absorb sunlight and build strength.
Mower Health Check: Before starting, ensure your blades are clean and sharp. Blunt blades will tear the grass rather than cut it, leaving it vulnerable to disease.
Mind the Bulbs: If you have spring bulbs like crocuses or daffodils growing in your lawn, wait at least six weeks after they finish flowering before mowing that specific area.
Timing is Key: Aim for mid-morning or late afternoon when the dew has evaporated, as cutting wet grass can clog your mower and lead to an uneven finish.
