Changing energy tariffs as the weather changes

If you’ve got a heat pump, or other electric heating, then your electricity consumption is likely to be very different in the Winter than in the Summer, meaning that it may make sense to be on a different tariff. Some energy providers will allow you to change your tariff depending on the time of year, and doing this can be worth ~£200 on your bills, depending on your set up.

Broadly speaking, if you’ve got a heat pump and no EV, you may want to switch over to a heat pump tariff in late October/early November. If you’ve got an EV doing significant milage, it may be worth waiting another month or so.

If you’d like to see when it makes the most sense for you to change, you can do so by putting your own numbers into our free tariff optimiser tool.

Will Scaffolding Wreck My Garden?
It's a fair question, especially if you've spent years getting your garden how you like it. The short answer is no, and it's up for less time than most people fear (usually ~ a week).

Scaffolding usually goes up about 3 days before install and comes down about 3 days after the panels are fitted. It sits against the house wall, and a good crew works around what's already there.

Scaffolding is the only part of our work that we outsource, but we don’t use just anyone. We have just 3 local companies we have relationships with and trust to do a good job on our behalf. And if there are any problems, we always make sure they’re put right.

So it's a few days of scaffold at most, and then your garden is your own again.

What Actually Happens on Install Day?

A lot of people imagine solar is a huge, disruptive job that takes over the house for weeks. For a typical home, it's usually a day or two.

Here's roughly how it goes: Scaffolding goes up about 3 days before so the roof can be reached safely. The roof team (usually 2) fits the mounting, panels and bird proofing while electricians (usually 2) install the inverter, battery and wiring, then connect everything to the house supply. Your power may be off for a short window while it's wired in, and we can coordinate this time with you for minimal disruption. Then the system is tested and switched on, and one of our team will show you the app.
The scaffolding comes down a few days later, just in case there’s any need we need to go back up there.

Our unique handover service happens after you’ve had the system for a week or two.
There's no structural work and no knocking the house about. Most people are surprised at how quietly and quickly it happens.

It's a smaller upheaval than fitting a new bathroom, and at the end of it your roof is generating.

Hi everyone 👋

One of our customers, Tim, filmed his neighbours' install and put it on YouTube.

We fitted Tim's panels last year. When Katy and Ricardo next door went ahead, he followed the job from the first morning to switch on, and had a chat with them partway through about why they decided to do it.

Thank you to Tim for making it, and to Katy and Ricardo for putting up with us for a few days.

If you have been thinking about solar and want to see what the process actually looks like, it is worth a watch.

Does My House Need Planning Permission for Solar?

It's one of the first things people worry about, and the good news is that for most homes the answer is no.

Solar usually falls under what's called permitted development, which means you can go ahead without submitting a planning application. For the majority of houses, that's the case.

There are exceptions worth knowing about:

🏠 Listed buildings and homes in conservation areas have stricter rules

🏢 Some flats and maisonettes need extra permissions

📐 Panels generally shouldn't project above the highest part of your roof

We check all of this as part of designing your system, so you're never left guessing or finding out the hard way after the fact.
Most roofs are absolutely fine.

☀️ Going Away This Summer? Your Solar Doesn't Take a Holiday

Heading off for a couple of weeks? Your panels keep working the whole time you're gone, and it's one of the quiet perks nobody mentions when you get solar.

With the house empty and barely using any power, almost everything your panels generate gets exported to the grid. That means you come home to export credit you earned while you were sitting on a beach.

If you've got a battery, it fills up each day and powers the few things still running while you're away, like the fridge, the router and anything on standby. So you pull very little from the grid, even with nobody home.

There's nothing to switch off and nothing to set up. The roof just gets on with it.
