A useful little field test from this week.
We installed one of our new Redeye squirrel feeding stations on Sunday and by Friday, the hopper was almost empty.
That works out at roughly 0.5kg of feed disappearing every day.
Published estimates suggest an adult grey squirrel typically consumes around 40 to 80g of food per day. On that basis, 500g represents the equivalent daily food intake of roughly 6 to 12 grey squirrels.
It isn’t a literal headcount, squirrels cache food, individuals may take different amounts and other wildlife can contribute, but it gives a useful indication of the level of pressure on the site.
It also puts into perspective what grey squirrels can do to ordinary garden bird feeders. A site supporting several animals can get through a surprising amount of feed very quickly, leaving the birds hungry.
More importantly, we’ve now directly confirmed grey squirrels using the station, so the control point has been successfully established within a few days.
That’s the purpose of the Redeye approach: establish predictable activity at a known location, monitor the pressure, then manage it in a structured and targeted way.
