🌳 Tree Spotlight 🌳
Holm oak (Quercus ilex)

Type: Evergreen broadleaf tree

Lifespan: Long-lived; some specimens can survive for several centuries and occasionally beyond
1,000 years

Native Region: Mediterranean region, including southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of the Near East

Native Habitat: Mediterranean woodland, scrub, coastal areas, and rocky slopes

Family: Fagaceae (beech family)

Mature Height: Typically up to 20 m in the UK, though larger in favourable climates

Common Diseases: Generally robust, though it may be affected by aphids, leaf-mining moths,
powdery mildew, and honey fungus. It suits milder areas and can be damaged in severe cold.

Characteristics: A large evergreen tree with a dense, rounded crown. Leaves are glossy dark green above and paler beneath; young leaves can be spiny, while older leaves are smoother. Bark is dark and finely cracked.

Benefits to Wildlife: Acorns provide food for birds and mammals, while the dense evergreen canopy offers year-round shelter. Like other oaks, its pollen can support insects, although it is mainly wind-pollinated.

Uses to Us: Its hard, durable wood has been used for fuel and timber, and the acorns have long supported grazing systems such as the Spanish dehesa.

Notes: Introduced to Britain in the late 1500s, holm oak is now naturalised in parts of the UK. It is well suited to coastal and relatively mild areas, and can resprout after damage.
Can mistaken for olive trees when young.

Did you know we have now have a cherry picker?

This machine expands our capabilities, we can now prune and dismantle trees in hard to reach places or dead trees that are too dangerous to climb.

It fits through most garden gates and has tracks to deal with difficult terrain.

A recent fencing job we completed in Badsey!

Before and after.

We also erected picket fencing on the front driveway and trellis in the back.

Really pleased with how this one turned out… now if only the sunshine had made an appearance for the final photos! 🌤️

Now is the time to spot dead trees!

If a tree you own doesn’t have leaves by now there is most likely a problem.

🪾 Check the trunk for signs of fungus or decay.

🪾 Check the root plate for lifting, movement, or exposed roots.

🪾 Look for signs of disease.

🪾 Tap the trunk — a hollow sound can indicate internal decay.
