There comes a point where you have to ask how much more tradespeople are expected to absorb.

Diesel has now hit a record high of 199.33p a litre, according to the RAC. We are basically staring at £2 a litre.

For someone who uses their car occasionally, that is painful enough. But for thousands of people working in construction, the van isn't optional. It is how you get yourself, your tools and your materials to site every morning.

You can't exactly carry a mitre saw, three toolboxes and a week's worth of gear onto the bus.

And that is what often gets missed whenever fuel prices shoot up.

For a tradesperson doing hundreds of miles every week, even a relatively small increase at the pump quickly becomes a serious monthly expense. If you run multiple vans or regularly tow plant and equipment, it gets worse again.

Those increased transport costs don't just disappear. Eventually they work their way into the price of doing the job.

Then the customer gets a quote that is higher than they expected and wonders why construction has become so expensive.

This is part of the reason.

Nobody wants to charge customers more. Most decent tradespeople would probably rather keep their prices competitive and have a diary full of work.

But there is only so much a business can swallow before the numbers simply stop working.

The question is, where does it end?

Because eventually these costs have to be reflected somewhere.

If you're running a van every day for work, how much is fuel costing you each week now? 👇
