🌞 Laying turf in hot weather? Here are our top tips!

Warm, sunny weather is great for enjoying the garden, but it can make laying new turf more challenging. Fresh turf is a living product, so it needs to be laid quickly and watered well to give it the best start.

βœ… Prepare before delivery
Make sure the ground is level, lightly firmed and ready before your turf arrives.

βœ… Lay straight away
Do not leave rolls sitting in the sun. Turf can dry out quickly in warm weather, so lay it as soon as possible.

βœ… Dampen the soil first
Lightly water the prepared ground before laying to help stop the turf drying out underneath.

βœ… Water immediately after laying
Give your new lawn a thorough soak so the water reaches through to the soil below.

βœ… Keep watering daily
In hot weather, newly laid turf may need watering morning and evening, especially during the first few weeks.

βœ… Avoid the hottest part of the day
Where possible, lay turf early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

βœ… Stay off while it roots
Avoid walking on new turf until it has rooted properly.

With the right preparation and watering routine, your new lawn can establish beautifully, even in warmer weather.

🌱 When is the best time to water newly laid turf?

Watering is one of the most important parts of helping your new lawn establish properly, especially during warm or dry weather.

The best times to water your turf are:

βœ… Early morning
βœ… Early evening

Try to avoid watering during the hottest part of the day, as the water can evaporate quickly before it has chance to soak down into the soil.

After laying new turf, water it immediately and make sure the water reaches through the turf and into the soil underneath. The turf should be kept consistently moist while it establishes.

As a guide, newly laid turf should usually be watered daily for the first 2 to 3 weeks. In hot, dry or windy weather, it may need watering twice a day β€” morning and evening.

You can check if it is getting enough water by carefully lifting a corner of the turf. The soil underneath should feel damp, not dry.

Once the turf has rooted properly, you can gradually reduce watering and move to a normal lawn care routine.

A little extra care at the start makes a big difference to the long-term health of your lawn.

🌞 Warm & sunny weekend ahead β€” keep your turf looking its best!

With the weekend expected to be very warm and sunny, now is the perfect time to give your lawn a little extra care. New turf and existing garden lawns can dry out quickly in summer weather, especially during long periods of direct sunlight.

For newly laid turf:
βœ… Water early morning and evening
βœ… Keep the turf moist for the first few weeks
βœ… Avoid walking on it while it establishes
βœ… Lay turf as soon as possible after delivery
βœ… Pay extra attention to edges, joins and areas near patios or paths

For existing lawns:
βœ… Give your lawn a deep soak rather than a light sprinkle
βœ… Avoid cutting the grass too short in hot weather
βœ… Water outside the hottest part of the day
βœ… Use a suitable lawn feed to help maintain colour and strength
βœ… Watch for dry patches and treat them early

A little extra watering and care during warm weather can make a big difference, helping your lawn stay green, healthy and ready to enjoy all summer long.

Ever noticed the edge of your lawn turning brown next to a path, patio or driveway? β˜€οΈ

This is a common issue, especially during warm weather. The grass closest to hard surfaces often dries out faster because paving absorbs and reflects heat from the sun.

In many cases, the real problem is underneath the surface. Paths and driveways are often built with concrete or hardcore beneath the edges, leaving only a shallow layer of soil for the grass roots. This means the lawn has less access to moisture and nutrients, making it much more likely to dry out or die back.

These areas are also usually high-traffic spots, which can compact the soil and slow down recovery.

How to help prevent it:

βœ… Water path edges more regularly during dry spells
βœ… Apply lawn fertiliser to replace lost nutrients
βœ… Avoid heavy foot traffic while the grass recovers
βœ… Add fresh topsoil where possible if the soil is shallow
βœ… Reseed or patch with fresh turf if the area has died back completely

A little extra care along lawn edges can make a big difference, especially during hot, dry weather. 🌱

🚚 Fresh Turf Delivered, Don’t Delay! 🌱

When your turf arrives, timing is everything.

Turf is a natural, perishable product, and for the best results it should be laid as soon as possible. Ideally within 24 hours of delivery.

At TurfWorld, we go the extra mile to make this easy for you:

βœ”οΈ Harvested to order – never sitting around
βœ”οΈ Delivered on carefully scheduled days
βœ”οΈ Arrives fresh and ready to lay

Our team works hard behind the scenes to ensure your turf gets to you in peak condition so you can achieve the best possible finish for your lawn.

⏳ Top tip: Don’t leave turf rolled up or stacked for long periods, as heat can build up and affect quality.

A quick turnaround from delivery to laying makes all the difference between good turf… and a great lawn 🌿

Not sure how much turf you need for a circular lawn? Here’s a quick way to work it out.

For a circle, measure the diameter across the widest part of the lawn, then divide it by 2 to get the radius.

Use this calculation:

Area = 3.14 x radius x radius

Example:
If your circular lawn is 6m wide:

Radius = 3m
3.14 x 3 x 3 = 28.26mΒ²

We always recommend adding around 10% extra to allow for trimming, shaping and natural waste when laying turf.

So for this example:

28.26mΒ² + 10% = approx. 31mΒ² of turf needed

Ordering slightly more helps avoid being caught short, especially around curved edges where more cutting is usually required.

πŸ’§ Watering Your New Turf – The Key to a Perfect Lawn 🌱

Your new turf has arrived β€” now it’s time to give it the best possible start!

Proper watering is essential to help your lawn establish strong roots and thrive. For the first 3 weeks, we recommend:

βœ”οΈ Watering twice daily
βœ”οΈ Early morning and evening only
βœ”οΈ Avoid watering in direct sunlight to prevent scorching

Keeping your turf consistently moist (but not waterlogged) will ensure the roots knit into the soil quickly and evenly.

A little care now makes all the difference between an average lawn… and a lush, vibrant one 🌿

If you have any questions about aftercare, our team is always happy to help!
