When choosing a construction project manager...

it’s easy to look for someone who has delivered exactly the same type of building before.

But we think there’s a question worth asking to help you with your choice:

"where does the complexity in your project actually lie?"

If you’re working in a live environment, for example, experience managing construction around ongoing operations could be more important than experience of an identical building.

Does every construction project need a project manager?

Project manager or quantity surveyor?

It’s not always an either/or question.

While there can be some overlap, the two roles have different responsibilities within a construction project.

A quantity surveyor typically focuses on costs and financial control, while a project manager looks across the wider project, coordinating the team, programme, decisions and delivery.

Understanding who is responsible for what from the outset can help avoid gaps as the project progresses.

There can be a lot of experienced people around the table on a construction project.

That’s where client-side project management comes in.

Working with a heritage building comes with a particular challenge.

You’re often trying to protect what makes the building important, while making sure it works for the people who use it today.

And those two things don’t always sit neatly together.

Modern requirements, heritage constraints, specialist advice and the practicalities of delivering the work all need to be considered as part of the same project.

There may not always be an obvious answer. What matters is bringing the right people into the conversation and understanding the implications of each decision before moving forward.
