If you like the look of traditional timber joinery but not the upkeep, consider aluminium flush sash windows. On a flush sash window, the sash closes level with the frame, which gives traditional timber casements their clean, flat finish.

Autumn is when roofline problems tend to show up, such as water spilling over a blocked gutter, a soffit board that's finally given way, or damp appearing at the top of a wall.

If you've noticed any of these in the last few weeks, get them looked at before the first hard freeze. Water that gets into a wall and then freezes does considerably more damage than water alone.
