Suburban Oasis A page focussed on my small suburban garden.

A garden service designed to fulfil the needs of a diverse range of people and gardens: regular maintenance, occasional assistance, soft landscaping designs, helpful advice, and programmes for lawn care, hedge maintenance and border management. To achieve your Suburban Oasis, I would be delighted to lend you as little as a green finger or as much as a helping hand.

Despite its universal benchmark in horticulture, it doesn’t come close enough to what I learned whilst studying at Great Dixter. A notebook always in hand and an eager mind to learn from one of the finest Plantsman in the world, Fergus Garrett. Very privileged!

Omphalodes cappadocica ā€˜Cherry Ingram’ needing some attention. Lifting, dividing (with the trusty Turkish knife) a quick haircut, good soak and finally repotting.

I’ll bring these through the winter and plant out next spring. šŸ’™

Not a task I particularly enjoy but the deed is donešŸ™Œ. Hopefully that should see me through until next June 🫰

Tulip colours for next year and bulbs arriving next week after a logistical hiccup šŸ™„. Narcissus and iris added to extend the seasonal longevity. Unsure of T. Barcelona’ but only time will tell.

It’s time for a rethink šŸ¤”. After the summer drought and the exceptionally high temperatures we experienced (I think the latter had more detrimental impact to the garden), I’m deciding to replant with species which will be able to deal with much drier conditions and more importantly able to withstand the heat that’s thrown at them.

It’s a space that I thought would have sufficient shade in the summer but those plants that I thought would happily sit in partial shade just couldn’t cope with the heat 🄵.

A wooden structure (waiting in the wings) and an initial shrubby evergreen will kick start the process. Possibly # a grey phlomis. Fillers will then be added: potential candidates could involve, stachys, nepeta and erysimum. Bulbs will be added in a year or two. Contrasting texture will be more important than flowers.

So it’s out with the old: mahonia, epimedium and omphalodes and a new home found…and in with the new.

Cercis canadensis ā€˜Forest Pansy’ A stunning shrub with heart-shaped leaves with deep, rich autumnal tones. I’m keeping it in a pot for my own garden (it can get quite large) but mindful not to pot on too early as this will affect the size of leaf. Prefers full sun but the excessive heat of the summer has forced me to move it to a position where it can escape the fiercest of the heat during the day.šŸ§”šŸ’›šŸ¤Ž

Brightening up your outdoor table isn’t just for summer. Lots of warm colours to choose from.

Feeding, protecting and clipping. A yearly programme that needs to be done to keep the box balls healthy.

Snipping away at this time of year will ensure they keep this tight shape throughout the darkest and coldest days of winter. A job made infinitely easier with good tools. āœ‚ļø Niwaki.
