Parklet number 5
Celebrating shade!
Architectural plants such as Fatsia Japonica

Yes you can totally have flowers in shade BUT don't underestimate the power and impact of foliage. Ferns are your friend!

Purple leaves in shade!! Do it!! "Purple leaves often thrive in shady environments thanks to anthocyanin." This is a pigment that absorbs green light. In low-light conditions, anthocyanins act as supplementary helpers by capturing previously unused light and redirecting it back into green chlorophyll cells, making photosynthesis more efficient

Ajuga has an upright blue flower
Astilbe has pink, red or white blooms
Persicaria often has a pink bloom
Anemones; for their pink & white blooms

We all love flowers in summer & pollinators will love you for nurturing them

Species like Erigeron are long flowering and an open daisy like flower, ideal for bees

Different shaped flowers will cater for a range of pollinators

Plant flowers amongst your vegetables and pollinators won't need to travel too far to find sweet treats. Use plants with a strong scent to deter pests.

Chertsey Trail
Let's get up close and personal with nature

I am serious when I say 'sniff a plant' just like we stop to smell the roses. Taking a deep breath of scented plants can be really beneficial to our entire system

At Number 2, there's plants like the 'Curry Plant,' 'Chocolate Cosmos,' & 'Lemon Verbena.'

The Bugs and Bloom trail started in Chertsey for the 6 week summer holiday. 8 interactive stops for children, families and those curious and wanting to connect to their inner child. 3 of which are 'parklets' mini planted area with somewhere to rest; I was fortunate enough to be asked to design the planting themes and plant these.

Number 1 (the terracotta one) based on Chertsey coat of arms. Green foliage for the metropolitan belt and rural areas. Yellow/Gold flowers to represent royalty, the history of the Abbey and local churches & blue for the connection to the River Thames and local smaller waterways

Number 2 (the blue one) Here I wanted to showcase growing edibles & pollinators in the same space. I used an Apple tree to represent the agricultural heritage and edibles like cucumbers, herbs, strawberries and tomatoes. Sensory planting like the lemon verbena, curry plant and a cosmos that smells like cosmos. Then a selection of sun loving flowers.

Number 3 (the green one) You can have a thriving garden in shade. Showcasing foliage and flowers that are happy to grow in shade. Most will even thrive. Architectural plants like Fatsia. Purple foliage like Ajuga and Heuchera. Greens and blooms like Astilbe and Persicaria

Walking is an excellent free form of exercise for our physical and mental health. This exciting project was led by Active Surrey in partnership with , A Line Art , Surrey County Council Skill Mill, Chertsey Library
