Pain is a signal, not a diagnosis. Your knee is screaming "I'm weak" and you're listening to it as "I'm broken…".
Most people in my office are scared. They stop running or going to the gym. Not because their pain is severe, but because they’re worried they’ll make whatever is causing the pain worse.
It’s critical that we ask what brought you in… the level of pain or the worry.
The answer drives direction of the rest of the visit. Most people can expect these aches and pains to subside within a few weeks and should expect a full return to activities.
Based on exam and perhaps an Xray, we may need further imaging, but we may not. Not knowing if someone is in my office for pain vs fear can easily lead to over-diagnosis and over-treatment since the threshold for recommending surgery for many physicians (no, not all) is the presence of any abnormality on an MRI.
I’m literally writing a book right now about this scenario… it’s far more complex than most realize. Especially if you take into account that probably 30-50% of commonly performed orthopedic surgeries aren’t needed.
